W.Va. Legislature holding mine safety hearings
February 04, 2012 9:03 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
West Virginia lawmakers plan to keep the deadly Upper Big Branch coal mine disaster in focus as they consider pending safety legislation.

The House and Senate Judiciary committees have scheduled information hearings for Monday and Tuesday in the House of Delegates Chamber.

State regulators and a West Virginia Coal Association official are on Monday's agenda. Lawmakers expect to hear Tuesday from the United Mine Workers union and safety expert Davitt McAteer.

McAteer led the special state investigation into the 2010 Upper Big Branch disaster. He and other scheduled speakers are to discuss the underground Raleigh County explosion that killed 29 miners.

Pending legislation from Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and from House leaders each include responses to Upper Big Branch. The Legislature will broadcast each 2 p.m. hearing via www.legis.state.wv.us .
