Lawmakers to work on new state budget next week
March 08, 2008 4:01 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
The Legislature will meet in extended session next week to complete work on next year's budget.

The House of Delegates and the Senate have each advanced its own spending proposal. Both versions call for spending slightly less than the 3.9 billion dollars recommended by Governor Manchin.

The House version includes money for 3 percent pay raises for teachers, school service personnel and rank-and-file state workers. The Senate opted instead yesterday for raises of $1,600 for teachers and $700 for school service personnel.

Helmick says senators may also increase the House's minimum hike of $600 for state employees who wouldn't receive that much from a 3 percent increase.

Troopers are promised salary hikes in a separate measure passed yesterday.
