Child killed exiting bus spurs W.Va. lawmakers

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
The Legislature has threatened drivers who fail to heed a stopped school bus with felonies and prison time when someone is injured or killed.

The bill unanimously passed by the House of Delegates to the governor Saturday also stiffens fines and suspends the licenses of offenders.

A driver who causes injury would face up to three years in prison, and up to 10 if there's a death.

Counties could also mount cameras on their buses to enforce the bill's provisions.

The 2007 death of Haven Brooke McCarthy spurred family members and lawmakers to push for tougher penalties.

The 6-year-old had stepped off a Lincoln County school bus when a passing vehicle struck her. The driver pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor.

The Senate approved the bill Friday.
