from Eyewitness News Online W.Va. gov signs new $11B state budget March 21, 2012 6:30 PM
CHARLESTON, W.Va. West Virginia's Racing Commission and State Police civilian employees are among those who can expect less funding in the new state budget. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin applied his line-item veto power Wednesday to reduce the $11.6 billion spending plan by about $13.5 million. The governor cited 15 objections before signing the budget bill, which will take effect July 1. The bulk of the cuts, around $9.9 million, reflect a revised estimate of how much the state must put toward the main pension fund for teachers. Tomblin cited concerns about increasing permanent spending and reduced pay raises for State Police civilian employees by $1 million to $250,000. The governor cut the Racing Commission's spending authority by nearly $697,000. He also deleted $510,000 budgeted for equipment at the Contractor Licensing Board. |
