Last Update on 02-09-2010 at 06:19:10from Eyewitness News Online Michael Jackson: Doctor Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter In Pop Star's Death LOS ANGELES Eight months -- one charge -- and one not-guilty plea. Michael Jackson's doctor has been charged with involuntary manslaughter -- eight months after the pop star's sudden death. Dr. Conrad Murray has pleaded not guilty to the single felony count, in which he's accused of "unlawfully, and without malice" killing Michael Jackson by acting "without due caution and circumspection." The five-page criminal complaint filed yesterday in Superior Court in Los Angeles provides no details on Jackson's death. But authorities have said the singer died June 25 after Murray administered the powerful anesthetic propofol and other drugs to help Jackson get some rest. Murray has claimed he did nothing that should have caused Jackson to die. If convicted, Murray faces up to four years in prison.
LOS ANGELES Michael Jackson's father says he and his family "need justice" in the death of Michael Jackson. And apparently Joe Jackson doesn't think he's getting it when it comes to the case against Dr. Conrad Murray. Murray has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death. But Jackson's dad feels the charge should be more serious. Says Joe Jackson: "My son was murdered." Murray is accused of causing Jackson's death -- though not deliberately. Jackson and his family watched yesterday's court hearing from courtroom seats behind prosecutors at a courthouse located near Los Angeles International Airport. Michael Jackson: The Courthouse Scene LOS ANGELES If yesterday's scene outside the courtroom where Michael Jackson's doctor was charged is any indication, a trial for Dr. Conrad Murray will rival those of sensational criminal trials in the Los Angeles area. Hundreds of reporters and fans of Michael Jackson were gathered outside the courthouse, which is located near Los Angeles International Airport. Soon after the charge was officially filed, several members of Jackson's family showed up, including his mother and father, his brothers Jermaine, Tito and Randy and his sister LaToya. About an hour later, Dr. Murray arrived at the courthouse and walked past the crowd. As he did, at least one person was heard to shout "murderer." Michael Jackson: To Build A Case LOS ANGELES If it seemed it took a while for prosecutors in Los Angeles to build a case against the doctor who was treating Michael Jackson at the time of his June 25 death, there are legal experts who would be inclined to agree. Prosecutors were methodical in approaching dropping a charge on Murray -- no doubt wary of the kind of mistakes that plagued some other high-profile celebrity cases, such as O.J. Simpson and actor Robert Blake, both of whom were acquitted of murder. After reviewing toxicology findings, the coroner ruled Jackson's death a homicide caused by acute intoxication of propofol. Murray appears to have obtained the drug legally and its use is not in itself a crime. But prosecutors are suggesting in their filing that the doctor didn't take the kind of care medical experts say should be taken when using the powerful drug. Hollywood Star Visits With Haiti Earthquake Victims In Dr SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic Angelina Jolie is the latest in a list of Hollywood stars to show up to give support for victims of the Haiti earthquake. She visited with hospitalized quake victims in the Dominican Republic. Dozens of survivors of the quake are being treated at a hospital in the capital of the DR, Santo Domingo. Jolie toured the hospital yesterday and spoke with several patients -- including children. Jolie is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency. Whoopi Goldberg/miley Cyrus: Involved In Auction To Help Haiti NEW YORK Singer Miley Cyrus has organized an online auction to benefit the relief effort in Haiti. And she is getting help from Whoopi Goldberg, among others. The singer is donating several items to be put up for bids, including the dress she wore to the Grammys earlier this month. Fans can also bid on items donated by Whoopi Goldberg, Britney Spears and Ellen DeGeneres. American Idol: It's Ellen's Turn, Will It Be Howard Stern's Too? LOS ANGELES It's the start of a new era for "American Idol" tonight. Ellen DeGeneres gets to sit in at the judges' table for the first time. The talk show host replaces Paula Abdul officially with tonight's show, which starts the Hollywood round. There were 181 singers who survived the audition process -- and now they will start the scramble for the the right to win a recording contract. Meanwhile, there's talk that shock jock Howard Stern was being offered Simon Cowell's seat at the table when the judge and show's creator leaves after this season. Stern says the job would be easy for him -- but they would have to pay him a ton of money to do it. Super Bowl Ratings Give Strong Showing NEW YORK The Super Bowl ratings? In a word, super. Not only was the New Orleans Saints' victory over the Indianapolis Colts the most-watched Super Bowl ever, the game is in position to be the most-watched TV program in U.S. television history. The early numbers from Nielsen say the game drew 106 million people -- more than the audience to watch the 1983 finale of "M-A-S-H." The numbers will be finalized today -- and if that lead holds up, Sunday's game will have made both NFL and TV history. Super Bowl Ads NEW YORK Look at it this way. A football game has 60 minutes of playing time. And the ads at this year's Super Bowl came close to equaling that. Commercials took up nearly 48 minutes of the game -- the most for any Super Bowl. Research firm Kantar Media says the amount of ads that aired on CBS was nearly 3 minutes longer than last year's total, the previous record holder. Gary Coleman: Former Child TV Star Pleads Guilty SALT LAKE CITY Most people get a cake, a card or a gift for their birthday. Gary Coleman got a court appearance -- and a guilty plea -- for his. The former child TV star pleaded guilty yesterday to a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge related to a domestic violence incident last April. Under a plea deal, the original charge of domestic violence assault was dropped. No details of the incident are detailed in the court records. But an attorney for Coleman tells The Associated Press that Coleman and his wife had an argument which got out of hand. The judge sentenced Coleman to 31 and a half days in jail. He won't have to serve the time if he finishes a domestic violence course and pays a $595 fine. Chris Brown/Rihanna: Looking Back One year ago today, Chris Brown and Rihanna were the talk of the music world -- for reasons other than music. Authorities in Los Angeles were investigating Brown for beating up his then-girlfriend -- and Rihanna was nursing the injuries she suffered in the attack, which took place as the two were driving home after a pre-Grammy party. Both were supposed to attend the Grammys and perform -- but didn't. Brown eventually pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge and got a suspended sentence. Quincy Jones: Looking Back On this date in 1993, producer Quincy Jones had his seventh child when actress Nastassja Kinski gave birth to a girl in Los Angeles. His six other children were from previous relationships. Michael Jackson/Spike Lee: Looking Back On this date in 1996, Michael Jackson and director Spike Lee arrived in Brazil to film a video for Jackson's song, "They Don't Care About Us." The video shoot in a Rio de Janeiro slum upset officials who had been trying to revive the city's tourism industry. The crew was reported to have paid off drug traffickers so they could film in the slum. LaToya Jackson: Looking Back On this date in 1990, authorities in Malaysia insisted La Toya Jackson's presence would be "against the values and norms of the Malaysian culture." Jackson, who had posed nude for Playboy the previous year, was quoted as saying: "I guess this means I will cancel my order for candies for members of the government." Flip Wilson: Looking Back On this date in 1975, comedian Flip Wilson was one of the guests as Cher's solo TV show made its premiere. Elton John and Bette Midler also appeared on the CBS show. Wilson died in 1998 after a battle with liver cancer. Barbara Lewis: Birthday It's birthday number 67 for singer Barbara Lewis. Among her hits in the 1960's was "Hello Stranger," which spent two weeks at the top of the R&B singles list in 1963. The Dells did the backing vocals for that tune. She also had a hit with "Baby, I'm Yours." It got as high as No. 5 on the charts in 1965. Alice Walker: Birthday A birthday today for author Alice Walker. She turns 66.
