Something's rotten in Liechtenstein

The jig appears to be up regarding suspected phony tax havens in the Western European nation of Liechtenstein, sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria.

The story came to light recently when German prosecutors said they'd recovered more than 40 million dollars and nabbed 163 people for tax evasion. Similar probes are under way around the world, including by the IRS here in the U.S.

The suspects are accused of putting money in foundations set up in Liechtenstein. Authorities say the foundations examined so far have taken in about 300 million dollars, involving more than a thousand people.

The U.S. has immediately turned its attention to more than 100 Americans, asking the question whether they followed the law by providing proper income reporting and making tax payments.

The message coming from authorities: There's no safe haven when it comes to tax avoidance and evasion, including Liechtenstein.
