Most Americans expecting a refund

Some Americans use their income tax withholdings like a forced savings system.

By working to ensure that they get a refund, there's the added benefit of avoiding an unwelcome tax bill come filing season.

The National Retail Federation found that seven in 10 Americans were expecting a refund this year. Perhaps it is a reflection of challenging economic times that nearly half plan to use the refund to pay off debt, which is up from last year.

About a quarter of those surveyed said they'd use the money to fund everyday expenses. A small number, about 12 percent, plan to treat themselves to a major purchase, and an equal number plan to take a vacation.

The trade group also found that consumers were filing their returns earlier this year. No doubt the anticipation of a refund encourages some folks to try to get reunited with their money a little earlier.
