Smart Ideas To Save You Time and Money on your Taxes

You may not have to file

Whether you must file a tax return is dictated by your income level. This year's filing season has a new twist, because only persons filing a return will receive an economic stimulus payment. That alone may be reason enough for some people to file this season when they have not in the past.

Another consideration is the fact that you should file a return to get a refund of any taxes withheld, but not owed.

Returns should be filed in cases where a refundable credit could help to get you money back. These include the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Additional Child Tax Credit and the Health Coverage Tax Credit.

Otherwise, a married couple filing jointly, under age 65, is not required to file a federal income tax return unless their combined income is $17,500 or more. A single person, younger than age 65, will not need to file with gross income of less than $8,750.
