Three-time PGA Tour winner dealing with tragedy PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. Jeff Maggert has withdrawn from The Players Championship due to a family emergency. The golfer tells tournament officials that his brother died in a small plane crash in Colorado en route to his son's college graduation. The Gilpin County Sheriff's office says one man died and a 23-year-old passenger was injured yesterday afternoon when the single-engine plane crashed into a snowy mountain about 40 miles west of Denver. The Aspen Daily News reports he plane's co-owners say that Maggert was flying the plane to Boulder for his son's graduation from the University of Colorado. Jeff Maggert played yesterday afternoon and opened with an even-par 72 before learning of the crash and heading to Colorado.
LeBron, Cavs off the mark...A pair of 31s beat Paul's 35 Right now, the Cleveland Cavaliers don't have a shot against the Boston Celtics. The Celts have a two-games-to-none lead in the NBA's Eastern Conference finals after holding the Cavs under 36 percent shooting in an 89-73 win at Boston. LeBron James missed 18 of his 24 shots, leaving him just 8-for-42 in the first two games of the series. James was 0-for-5 from the field while the Cavaliers were shooting 11.8 percent in a disastrous second quarter. The Celtics took control by outscoring Cleveland 27-12 in the second period to grab an eight-point halftime lead. Boston surged ahead after the Cavaliers took a 24-17 lead into the quarter. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen led the Celtics' offense after the pair was held to just four points on 2-for-18 shooting in Tuesday's 76-72 win over the Cavaliers. Pierce delivered 19 points and Allen added 16 while teammate Kevin Garnett finished with 13 and 12 rebounds. James actually led all scorers with 21 points for the Cavs, who host Game 3 tomorrow. The Cavaliers played the last three quarters without Ben Wallace due to dizziness brought on by allergies. The San Antonio Spurs are within 2-1 in their Western Conference semifinal series with New Orleans. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker each scored 31 points as the Spurs knocked off the Hornets 110-99. Tim Duncan chipped in 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs, who trailed by a basket before outscoring the Hornets by 13 in the second half. Ginobili, Parker and Duncan also fueled an 11-oh run that put San Antonio ahead 101-88 with 5:57 remaining. Chris Paul had another strong game for New Orleans, finishing with a game-high 35 points and nine assists. David West delivered 23 points and 12 rebounds, but Peja Stojakovic managed just eight points on 2-of-7 shooting. The series stays in San Antonio for Game 4 Sunday.
Bryant leads the way NEW YORK Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has been unanimously named to the All-NBA team. Bryant was voted to the first team for the third straight season and sixth time in his career after leading the Lakers to the best record in the Western Conference. Bryant is joined on the first team by New Orleans guard Chris Paul Boston forward Kevin Garnett, Cleveland forward LeBron James and Orlando center Dwight Howard.
Billups questionable for Game 4 versus Magic ORLANDO, Fla. Detroit Pistons guard Chauncey Billups isn't sure he'll be ready to play in Game 4 of the team's Eastern Conference semifinal series tomorrow against Orlando. Billups played the first four minutes of Wednesday's loss to the Magic before leaving the game with a strained right hamstring. The All-Star said yesterday he was still sore after spending the night in the trainer's room.
Vandeweghe promoted to GM EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The New Jersey Nets have a new general manager, promoting Kiki Vandeweghe less than six months after he was hired as a special assistant to team president Rod Thorn. Vandeweghe previously was the GM of the Denver Nuggets from August 2001 until the end of the 2005-06 season. He helped turn the Nuggets into a winning team after drafting Carmelo Anthony. Vandeweghe replaces Ed Stefanski, who left during the season to become the Philadelphia 76ers' GM.
Another Webb gem...Bucs sweep Giants again...Yankees flex muscles The Arizona Diamondbacks lead the National League with 23 wins this season, and Brandon Webb is responsible for over one-third of them. Webb improved to 8-and-0 by tossing a six-hitter in the Diamondbacks' 8-3 win over Philadelphia. He's the first pitcher to win his first eight starts of a season since Jon Garland of the Chicago White Sox three years ago. Chris Young hit a two-run homer and Chris Snyder added a two-run double as the D-Backs earned a split of the four-game series to move three and a-half games ahead of the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. Elsewhere in the National League, Matt Treanor slammed a three-run homer and Jorge Cantu hit a two-run blast in Florida's fourth straight win, 7-2 over Milwaukee. Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with a walk for the Marlins, who have matched their best 34-game start at 20-and-14. Pittsburgh's Adam LaRoche hit a go-ahead single in a three-run seventh inning that pushed the Pirates to a 5-4 victory and a three-game sweep of San Francisco. The Bucs have won 13 of their last 15 meetings with the Giants. Atlanta completed a 6-and-0 homestand by beating San Diego 5-4 on a bases-loaded single by Matt Diaz in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Greg Norton laced a game-tying two-run single for the Braves, who trailed 4-1 before earning a one-run victory for the first time in 10 tries this season. Matt Holliday had four singles and Jorge De La Rosa scattered five hits over 5 2-3 innings as Colorado beat St. Louis 9-3. Garrett Atkins doubled, tripled and drove in a pair of runs to help the Rockies earn a split of the four-game series.

Also on the junior circuit, Kason Gabbard threw near the head of Seattle's Richie Sexson to spark a benches-clearing incident in the Texas Rangers' 5-0 win over the Mariners. Gabbard's eye-high pitch came a half-inning after Felix Hernandez hit Ian Kinsler, who smacked a two-run homer off the Mariners' starter to put the Rangers ahead 4-0 in the second inning. Ramon Vazquez had four of the Rangers' 10 hits. The New York Yankees salvaged the finale of a three-game series by hitting four homers in a 6-3 win over Cleveland. Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano, Johnny Damon and Wilson Betemit went deep to support Mike Mussina, who blew a 3-0 lead before winning his fourth consecutive start. Jermaine Dye homered for the third straight game and Juan Uribe added a go-ahead two-run drive to lead the Chicago White Sox past the visiting Minnesota Twins 6-2. The win is just Chicago's second in nine games. Daniel Cabrera fired a three-hitter and the Baltimore Orioles halted a five-game losing streak by beating Kansas City 4-1. Nick Markakis launched a three-run homer after scoring the game's first run on a wild pitch. Tampa Bay blew a 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth before pulling out an 8-3 win at Toronto. Dioner Navarro hit a grand slam in the 13th inning after Carl Crawford drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Davis beats cancer...Rollins set to return...Schilling throws again...Gardy back with Twins Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis says he's cancer free. Davis says he got the news from a surgeon who removed the lefty's cancerous thyroid gland April 10th. The cancer was discovered before the season began, but Davis had two starts before undergoing the surgery. He's expected to make two rehab starts for Triple-A Tucson before rejoining the team. In other major league news: _ Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is expected to rejoin the team in San Francisco today after missing a month with a sprained left ankle. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel says he won't hesitate to put Rollins in the lineup as long as he appears healthy. _ Boston pitcher Curt Schilling played long toss prior to yesterday's game against Detroit as he continues to rehabilitate his injured shoulder. Red Sox manager Terry Francona says Schilling felt good but added the right-hander isn't satisfied with the speed of his recovery. _ The Toronto Blue Jays have placed shortstop David Eckstein and John McDonald on the disabled list. Eckstein suffered a strained right hip flexor and McDonald sprained his right ankle, both during Tuesday's loss to Tampa Bay. _ Washington catchers Paul Lo Duca and Johnny Estrada are going on the disabled list today. Lo Duca broke a bone in his right hand during Wednesday's loss to the Astros. Estrada hasn't played since April 30th due to a right elbow injury. _ Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was back in the dugout yesterday in Chicago after missing five games to be with his family following the death of his brother. _ And outfielder Jason Michaels has been traded by the Cleveland Indians to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named.
Wings win again DETROIT Johan Franzen continues to score them and Chris Osgood continues to stop them, two reasons why the Detroit Red Wings have a seven-game winning streak in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Franzen scored one of the Wings' three power-play goals in a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals last night. Franzen's 12th goal of the playoffs extended his team record, and he matched a club postseason mark by hitting the twine for a fifth straight game. Brian Rafalski and Tomas Holmstrom also scored with the man advantage before Valtteri Filppula made it 4-0 late in the second period. Osgood handled 20 shots and blanked the Stars until Brenden Morrow beat him with 1:07 left in the second period. Detroit's winning streak began when Osgood replaced Dominik Hasek in the nets. Marty Turco handled 27 shots while falling to 0-8-and-2 lifetime at Joe Louis Arena. Game 2 is tomorrow in Detroit.
Timonen likely to miss Penguins series due to clot PHILADELPHIA The Philadelphia Flyers probably will be without All-Star defenseman Kimmo Timonen for the NHL's Eastern Conference finals against Pittsburgh. A doctor has discovered a blood clot in his left ankle near an area where he was hit by a puck during Game 4 of the Flyers' second-round series against Montreal. Timonen says a doctor told him there was a chance he could play in a potential final series if the clot improves in the next two weeks. The Penguins host the Flyers in the opener tonight.
McGinest says this is it CLEVELAND Willie McGinest says his NFL career is about to end. The Cleveland Browns linebacker says he will retire after the upcoming season, telling SI.com he wants to finish on one last playoff run. McGinest played 12 seasons and won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots before playing the last two years with the Browns.
Garcia sets the standard PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. Sergio Garcia is the leader heading into the second round of the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He opened with a 6-under-par 66 that puts him two shots ahead of Kenny Perry and Paul Goydos . Garcia birdied each par-5 and also sank a 50-foot birdie putt on 14 as he tries to win for the first time in his last 54 starts.
Scottish player has lead during opening round WILLIAMSBURG, Va. Scotland's Mhairi McKay fired a bogey-free 8-under-par 63 to take the first-round lead in the LPGA's Michelob Ultra Open at Williamsburg, Virginia. She leads Annika Sorenstam and Sun Young Soo by one shot.
Jockey Club stepping up NEW YORK The Jockey Club has formed a committee to study equine health, including track safety and the rules of racing. The news comes five days after the death of the filly Eight Belles at the Kentucky Derby. The chairman of The Jockey Club says the committee will be asked to review every facet of equine health, ranging from breeding practices to medication, and to recommend actions to be taken by the horse industry to improve the health and safety of thoroughbreds. |
