Wings-Leafs Winter Classic at the Big House?
ANN ARBOR, Mich.
A person familiar with the NHL's plan says the Detroit Red Wings will play the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2013 Winter Classic at the Big House, Michigan Stadium.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the league is not expected to announce the lineup until Thursday.
Earlier, the University of Michigan Board of Regents authorized the athletics department to seek a contract with the NHL that would allow the league to hold next year's showcase at Michigan Stadium. The NHL has offered to pay up to $3 million for a license to use the iconic college football stadium, according to the recommendation approved by the board.
The Wolverines and rival Michigan State attracted a Guinness World Record 104,173 people for a hockey game there back in December of 2010.
No confirmation yet, but the NHL does say it will have a major announcement Thursday at Detroit's Comerica Park, with an additional media availability in Ann Arbor that same day.
Big East finally welcomes Tigers..."Plus-One" may not be coming soon
The Big East says Memphis has officially accepted an invitation to be part of the conference's next incarnation in 2013. Memphis is the seventh school, and fourth from Conference USA, to sign up for future membership in the Big East since December. The Tigers will compete in the Big East in all sports.
In other college news:
_ The man who helped propose the plus-one plan to find a national champion in football says actual change remains a couple years away even if everyone can agree on changes to the Bowl Championship Series. Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive says a decision could be made later this year, but cautioned that it's premature to speculate on what changes might be made.
_ The University of North Dakota says it will resume using its contentious Fighting Sioux nickname despite threats from the NCAA. A state law that required the university to use the nickname and a logo that shows the profile of an American Indian warrior was repealed last year. But late Tuesday, supporters of the name filed petitions demanding that the issue be put to a statewide vote.
Huskies impose penalties, with conditions
HARTFORD, Conn.
The University of Connecticut has proposed its own penalties for failing to meet academic standards on its men's basketball team, but there's a big "if" involved.
The Huskies will forfeit the revenue awarded to the Big East for participating in the NCAA tournament, reduce the number of regular-season games played in the 2012-13 season from 27 to 23, and bar coach Jim Calhoun from meeting off-campus with prospective recruits during the fall 2012 contact period, if the NCAA approves a recently filed waiver allowing UConn to participate in this year's championship.
As it stands now, the school does not qualify for the tournament based on several years of low academic progress reports.
Meanwhile, Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun will miss Saturday's game against No. 2 Syracuse because of a painful condition in his lower back. He's already missed Saturday's win over Seton Hall and Monday's loss at Louisville.
Marlins lose another arbitration ruling
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez won a favorable arbitration decision Monday.
Players and teams have split four decisions.

Bergesen asked for a raise from $434,000 to $1.2 million during Wednesday's hearing. The Orioles argued he should be paid $800,000.

A decision is expected Thursday.
