Iowa upset There was a big upset today in college football as previously unbeaten Iowa, the eighth-ranked team in the nation, was beaten by Northwestern 17-10. The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak and leaves the Hawkeyes 9-and-1 this season. Northwestern's Dan Persa threw a touchdown pass and Marshall Thomas recovered a fumble for another score. This is the Wildcats first win over a top-10 opponent since knocking off then-No. 6 Ohio State 33-27 in overtime in 2004. Iowa lost quarterback Ricky Stanzi to an apparent ankle injury early in the second quarter. Freshman James Vandenberg was just 9 of 27 for 82 yards filling in, and couldn't lead the Hawkeyes to any points after Stanzi left the game. The Hawkeyes can still win at least a share of the Big Ten title with victories over Ohio State and Minnesota in their final two games. _ No. 2 Texas got a good game out of Jordan Shipley as he set a Texas record with 273 yards receiving, including an 88-yard touchdown, as the Longhorns shook off a slow start for a 35-3 win over Central Florida. The sixth-year senior broke the Texas mark of 198 set in 1979 by Johnny "Lam" Jones. Colt McCoy passed for 470 yards with two touchdowns. He was just shy of current Texas running backs coach Major Applewhite's school-record 473 yards in the 2001 Holiday Bowl. The Longhorns remain one of the nation's unbeaten teams and now stand 9-0 _ Pittsburgh, the 14th-ranked school in the AP football poll, is 8-and-1 after beating Syracuse 37-10. Dion Lewis ran for 110 yards and a touchdown for the freshman's sixth 100-yard game and tight end Dorin Dickerson caught his 10th touchdown pass this season. Pitt has won five straight and faces No. 19 Notre Dame next Saturday. _ Graig Cooper rushed for a career-best 152 yards and a touchdown and Damien Berry ran for a pair of second-half scores as No. 16 Miami eased past struggling Virginia 52-17. Hurricanes' quarterback Jacory Harris finished 18 of 31 for 232 yards with two TDs. The 35-point margin of victory was Miami's biggest in an ACC game since beating Duke 52-7 in 2005. _ John Clay ran for 134 yards and a touchdown, Montee Ball scored two TDs and No. 24 Wisconsin held off Indiana for a 31-28 victory. The win is Wisconsin's second straight while Indiana has lost three in a row and six of seven.
Law is back in the game ENGLEWOOD, Colo. The Denver Broncos have shored up their secondary with another veteran, signing cornerback Ty Law. The 35-year-old, who has been to five Pro Bowls, gives the Broncos five players over 30 in the defensive backfield that now sports a combined 20 Pro Bowl selections. Law, a 15-year veteran, played seven games with the New York Jets last season and had been training in Florida waiting for a call from an NFL club.
Cuddyer coming back MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins have picked up the $10.5 million option on outfielder Michael Cuddyer for 2011. Cuddyer hit a career-high 32 home runs to lead the team in 2009. He also had 94 RBIs and was sixth in the American League with 73 extra-base hits. When slugger Justin Morneau went out with a back injury in September, Cuddyer moved from right field to first base. He hit .352 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in the next 19 games as the Twins leapfrogged the Tigers and won the AL Central title.
NBA card takes place tonight Seven games are on the NBA schedule this evening after the last two undefeated teams, Denver and Boston, both lost last night. The Nuggets look for a chance for another win as they play the Hawks in Atlanta, New Jersey is home to the Celtics, Charlotte plays at Chicago, it'll be Milwaukee at home to New York, Toronto plays at Dallas, Sacramento is in Salt Lake City against the Jazz and Memphis is in L.A. for a game with the Clippers.
Martinek done UNIONDALE, N.Y. New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek is out for the season with a knee injury. The Islanders say that Martinek tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last night in the third period of a 2-1 loss at New Jersey. The oft-injured defenseman was helped off the ice with about 5:45 to play after he was hit hard against the boards in front of the Devils bench by Zach Parise .
A day game is followed by a busy night of play There's one day game in the NHL. That contest is being played in Los Angeles as the Kings face Nashville. On tap tonight, Boston is home to Buffalo, New Jersey is skating in Ottawa, Detroit plays at Toronto, Montreal is home to Tampa Bay, Florida plays at Washington, Philadelphia is playing host to St. Louis, Atlanta is in New York to face the Islanders, Columbus is on the home ice for a game with Carolina, Dallas is skating at Minnesota, Anaheim is entertaining Phoenix, the New York Rangers are at Calgary and San Jose is home to Pittsburgh.
Mickelson grabs lead SHANGHAI Phil Mickelson has taken the 54-hole lead in the HSBC Champions with a 5-under 67, setting up a Sunday matchup with Tiger Woods in the final World Golf Championship of the year. Gaining even more confidence in his putting, Mickelson strung together three birdies over the final five holes to turn a two-shot deficit into a two-shot lead over the back nine today at Sheshan International. He finished at 14-under 202. Woods failed to make a birdie over the final eight holes for a 70, leaving him two shots behind. Woods was tied with Nick Watney, who holed a 50-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a 70.
Song tops field SHIMA, Japan South Korea's Bo Bae Song birdied the final hole for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke lead in the Mizuno Classic. Song had six birdies in a front-nine 30, then had two birdies and bogey on the final nine holes today to reach 11 under. Akane Iijima and In-Kyung Kim were tied for second, and Rui Kitada was 9 under in the event sanctioned by the LPGA Tour and Japan LPGA. Defending champion Jiyai Shin was 8 under in a group that included Japanese star Ai Miyazato, 2007 winner Momoko Ueda and first-round leader Brittany Lang _ the lone non-Asian player in the top 12. Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa was 4 under.
Italy takes 2-0 lead over U.S. REGGIO CALABRIA, Italy The U.S. Fed Cup team is deep trouble. Not playing with the Williams sisters, who opted out of this year's event, the American squad lost both singles matches today and trails Italy in the best-of-five final 2-0. In today's play both Alexa Glatch and Melanie Oudin of the U.S. lost in straight sets. Glatch lost to Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-1 and Francesca Schiavone rallied after a two-hour rain delay to defeat Oudin 7-6, 6-2 on the outdoor red clay court. Reverse singles and doubles are scheduled for tomorrow in the best-of-five series.
Looks like a fine for Williams REGGIO CALABRIA, Italy The president of the International Tennis Federation thinks Serena Williams will receive a fine but not be suspended for her U.S. Open tirade. In an interview with The Associated Press, Francesco Ricci Bitti said a fine would "make much more sense." Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock is expected to give his recommendation to the Grand Slam committee, which will likely announce the sanction Monday or Tuesday.
Final day of racing ARCADIA, Calif. The 26th Breeders' Cup World Championships comes to an end today at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. In the first result of the afternoon, Pounced split horses in deep stretch and went on to victory in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Pounced defeated Bridgetown by three-quarters of a length. _ In the $2 million dollar Breeders Cup Sprint, Dancing in Silks pulled off a huge upset, winning a four-horse photo finish by a nose. Carla Gaines became the third woman to train a Breeders' Cup winner, and the first since Laura de Seroux saddled Azeri to a victory in the 2002 Ladies' Classic. _ In the $1 million dollar Breeders Cup Turf Sprint the winner was California Flag. The 5-year-old gray gelding defeated Gotta Have Her by 13/4 lengths. _ A couple of California-bred geldings have turned the international Breeders' Cup into a local affair, with California Flag and Dancing in Silks winning on their home track. California Flag lived up to his favorite's status, winning the $1 million Turf Sprint by 13/4 lengths. Dancing in Silks was a big shocker, surviving a four-horse photo finish to win the $2 million Sprint at 25-1 odds. _ Goldikova has successfully defended her title in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile, beating 10 male rivals. The Irish import won today's race at Santa Anita by a half-length. |
