'Cuse cruises Syracuse has waltzed into the regional finals of the NCAA tournament. The West Regional top seed went on a late first-half run to take control, then put away Gonzaga 87-65 in Buffalo. Wes Johnson led the way with 31 points and 14 rebounds as the Orange crushed the Bulldogs with 12 3-point field goals. The Zags were just 3 of 21 from beyond the arc. Syracuse improves to 30-4 and will take on Horizon League champ Butler in the round of 16 Thursday in Salt Lake City. Games in progress include East Regional action with West Virginia meeting Missouri and Wisconsin taking on Cornell. In the Midwest, Ohio State and Georgia Tech are battling for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen, as are Maryland and Michigan State. In the South Regional, top-seeded Duke meets California in Jacksonville while Purdue takes on Texas A-and-M in Spokane. In the West region, Pittsburgh faces Xavier in Milwaukee.
Huskies roll The beat goes on for top-ranked Connecticut. The Huskies opened NCAA women's tournament play by pounding Southern 95-39 for their 73rd consecutive win. All of them have been by double digits. Southern scored the first points of the game, but that was as good as it got as UConn went on a 15-2 run and never looked back. Tina Charles hit her first nine shots and wound up with 22 points for the 34-0 Huskies. The Northern Iowa women will look to duplicate the men's stunning upset of Kansas yesterday, when they take on top seed and once-beaten Nebraska in a Kansas City Regional match-up in Minneapolis.
Blazers face Suns The NBA's best matchup of the day is also the final game on the schedule. The Portland Trail Blazers will take on the Phoenix Suns as the two Western Conference teams look to improve their playoff status. Portland is holding down the eighth and final spot in the conference's post-season picture. The Blazers have won five in a row. The Lakers are also sporting a five-game winning streak as they get ready to host Washington, which has dropped 10 straight. Cleveland is also on another winning run. They look for their seventh straight when they take the home court against Detroit. The schedule began in New York with the Knicks hosting Houston. Oklahoma City looks to take another step toward clinching a playoff berth with it visits to Indiana. The slate includes the Los Angeles Clippers hosting Sacramento and Atlanta entertaining San Antonio.
Games under way The skating has started early in the National Hockey League with the Bruins and Rangers underway in Boston. The Blueshirts are within three points of the Bruins for the final playoff spot in the East despite a .500 record at 31-31-and-9. San Jose will try to move past Chicago for the top record in the Western Conference when the Sharks hit the road for Edmonton. The Blackhawks hold a one-point lead in the West. Phoenix is a point back of San Jose. The Coyotes are coming off a shootout win over Chicago last night visit Dallas tonight. Also on ice, Calgary is at Minnesota, Buffalo visits Carolina, Florida hosts Tampa Bay and Nashville is in St. Louis. Philadelphia hosts Atlanta, and Colorado invades Anaheim.
Racing at Bristol BRISTOL, Tenn. There should be plenty of bumping and close-quarters NASCAR racing today. The Sprint Cup series is on the Bristol Motor Speedway half-mile oval for the Food City 500. Pole-sitter Joey Logano is joined on the front row by Kurt Busch. Dave Blaney and Sprint Cup points leader Jimmie Johnson make up the second row, just in front of Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya.
Furyk looks to end drought PALM HARBOR, Fla. Play has resumed in the final round of the Transitions Championship after a suspension of neraly three and a half hours because of thunderstorms. The last group had yet to tee off when the horn sounded to halt play. Jim Furyk is trying to complete his first PGA victory in nearly three years. He enters the round with a three-shot edge over a host of players, including defending champ Retief Goosen .
Twins closer shelved for season FORT MYERS, Fla. The Twins suffered a big blow to their bullpen even before the season begins. Closer Joe Nathan will miss the entire season with a right elbow injury that will require surgery. He made the decision today after playing catch with Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson. Nathan leads the majors with 246 saves since 2004.
Wood looking for quick return GOODYEAR, Ariz. Injured closer Kerry Wood believes he'll be back pitching for the Cleveland Indians sooner than expected. Yesterday, the Indians forecast Wood would be sidelined for 6 to 8 weeks with a strained muscle below his right shoulder. However, the pitcher says he's confident his timetable to return will be shorter.
Good news for Jenks GLENDALE, Ariz. White Sox closer Bobby Jenks expects to be ready for the season opener after an MRI on his right calf revealed no structural damage. He missed his turn to pitch yesterday due to irritation. The calf has been an issue for Jenks since last season, when he missed the final 11 games and finished with 29 saves, but he said "regular routines" won't aggravate it. |
