School: Sissonville High School Primary Sport: Track and Field One of the returning champions on the West Virginia high school track and field scene in 2009 is Sissonville's Sydney Cummings, who is ready to reach new heights as a senior. In the rain of the 2008 state meet, Cummings won the Class AA high jump by clearing 5-6. "That was definitely a relief," she said of her title. "I really wanted to win it. I had been working really hard that year. I'm going to work hard, of course, to hopefully get the state record this year and break it." That record stands at 5-8. Besides the high jump, Cummings is displaying versatility this season by long jumping, running hurdles and the open 200 meters. "I work on sprinting and a little bit of distance and the long jump," she said. "Then, I usually come up here (UC Stadium) after practice and high jump." While she's eyeing a state record, her record in the classroom has been superb with a 4.25 grade point average. "Grades are first always," said Cummings, who aspires to be a nurse. "That's what's going to help me in my life and college." WVU appears to be her school of choice with track and field a possible part of her future. State record or no state record, she's proud to have represented Sissonville in a positive way. "I'm just happy to represent my school and hopefully do it well and represent the team also." |
