School: Nitro High School
Primary Sport: Baseball
A key to Nitro's Class AAA state championship baseball run last spring was first baseman Matt Frazer. As a senior he wants to make it back-to-back state title game conquests for the Wildcats.
Until a loss to Cabell Midland, Nitro started the season as a perfect 5-0.
"It's going pretty good," said Frazer of the early beginning. "We started out kind of slow. I mean we're still scoring a lot of runs. We're just getting back in the rhythm of things. The weather is not very good. It just takes a little time to get back into it."
Power is a big part of Frazer's game.
"Last year I ended pretty well," said Frazer. "This year I've started off a little slow. I'm not as good as I want, but I plan on picking it up a little bit."
Very few get to experience the thrill of winning a state title, Frazer knows he's among the fortunate.
"That was the best feeling in the world," he said of the championship. It was my first year at Nitro (transferring from GW) and to come and win a state championship like we did, it was great."
An outstanding student, Frazer takes a business-like approach in the classroom.
"School is school," he said. "Everybody's got to go, so might as well make it fun while you're there."
Brain power and bat power its a winning combination, making Matt Frazer a prized baseball recruit.
