School: Capital High School
Primary Sport: Baseball
You could say Capital senior Zach McCoy has grown up with the Cougar baseball program that is starting to taste success.
"I'm definitely happy to see this program starting to turn," said McCoy during a recent practice. "Our guys have always had potential. We finally got a coach about three years ago to turn the program around. Finally, we got things where they need to be. I'm real excited about it."
McCoy helped Capital reach the (Class AAA) regional semifinals last year. His strength is versatility.
"I love baseball, no matter what position I play it's all fun," he said. "It's hard sometimes to adjust to each position every day. Just as long as I know where I'm going to be before the game starts, I'll be OK."
Head coach Robert Massey, now in his third season, said of McCoy, "Zach led our team last year with a .430 batting average. This year he's already off to a good start, hitting .440 and leading the team in RBI's and doubles. He hits in the number three spot.
"Zach's a great kid and is not only going to be successful on the field, but off. Zach's grade point average is over 4.0 and he's a Promise Scholarship winner."
College is on the horizon and he hopes that includes the game of baseball.
"I'd definitely like to get recruited by colleges," McCoy admitted. "That would be great, it's always been a dream of mine."
