School: Nitro High School
Primary Sport: Basketball
One of Class AAA's better teams in the 2008-09 girls basketball season -- Nitro -- wasn't among the field of eight at the State Tournament. And that was a shame because fans didn't get to see the talented Sky Assif play.
In her senior season Assif ended up playing for three different head coaches. As a leader she helped make the transition easier for all of those involved.
"The girls on the team know a lot about basketball," Assif said. "I think just keep playing together (was the best advice she could give). The coaching thing, we all just came together as a team."
Assif started her career at University High School in Morgantown before moving to Nitro.
"I mean it was hard moving down here," she said. "It definitely was a big change. Playing behind a really good player like Kendra (Wallace) was difficult. Now, I feel like I've been playing a lot better."
Her old school was a part of the State Tournament, reaching the AAA semifinals. But Assif enjoyed playing in the highly-competitive Mountain State Athletic Conference.
"In the North, we play the same team twice. Just the different caliber of players (in the South) is just so much different. You play someone so good night-in and night-out. Up there you usually only have one good team like a North Marion or a Morgantown. It's nothing like playing here."
In the classroom, Assif carries a 4.5 grade point average. College basketball is a possibility. Regardless of what she chooses to do in the future, you can bet the Sky is the limit.
