Scholar Athlete of the Week
from Eyewitness Sports Online

Student: Cody Schuler
School: Winfield High School
Primary Sport: Basketball

He's made the grade in the classroom, and senior Cody Schuler has been a steady force in helping Winfield adjust to a new grade of competition at the Class AAA level.

"It's been kind of a privilege to play (Class) AAA," said Schuler. "It's my senior year, we have to work hard in practice. We've had a couple of road blocks, but we've overcome those. We feel like we're peaking at the right time. Everything's hitting right (just) before the playoffs, hopefully we can keep it up."

Schuler has been a true success story, going from virtually no playing time to full-time starter and contributor.

"There's only so many things you can control, not just in life but in basketball. When I get out on the court my goal is that no one wants it more than me," Schuler said. "If I outplay everybody, then I can make up for height or speed or whatever it may be that I'm faced up against. I work hard and it usually works out in the end."

Head coach Pat McGinnis said, "I'm going to be totally honest, I really didn't think Cody would get to this point that he is. He's really surprised me. I'm just so proud of how hard he's worked. It shows that a guy who maybe doesn't have the skill or talent that others have, if he works hard he can make something of himself."

His work harbits are illustrated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

"You've got to keep the grades up, you're a student first," Schuler said. "Coach McGinniss always says, 'Basketball's not going to put bread on the table.' So, you've got to make sure you keep your grades up, too.

Schuler is heading to WVU and plans to major in journalism.

"I think it's important you know - not just in sports but everything," he said. "I think journalism is an important career to go into."

Cody Schuler's story is a great one about perserverance. It's the type of story he looks forward to writing and telling as a future reporter.
