Student: Matt Rector
School: Herbert Hoover High School
Primary Sport: Wrestling

On the mats, Matt Rector has been a three-year state qualifier. But he's yet to reach the podium as one of the top six finishers.

"Last year I was one win away from placing, but just crumbled at the end," said Rector, a senior at Herbert Hoover.

Rector is competing this season in the 171-pound class. He's proud to have been a part of a program with a great tradition.

"It's really, really amazing," he said of Hoover's storied past. "It's a tough thing to do and not many people can do it. When you can get guys in here -- and we don't have many this year - the people who come in here and do it have to be special."

Wrestling is a demanding sport but Rector hasn't let his time on the mats and football field interfere with his studies.

"I graduate with honors this year and that's pretty nice," he said. "I've been taking a bunch of rigorous classes like my mom's wanted me to. I had seven last year and took three first semester this year. It's been pretty tough."

With the disappointment of seasons past in Huntington, Rector has been counting the days.

"I'm really hoping to be in the finals," he said. "I've been itching just to get back to the state tournament again the whole year. I'm ready to jump in there on the (February) 26th."

It's when Matt Rector hopes to add his name to Hoover's rich mat history.
