School: Roane County High School Primary Sport: Volleyball Last season Roane County High School reached the girls' state basketball tournament in Charleston, becoming the first team (boys or girls) in county history to compete in the event. One of the team's leaders was Ashli Knotts, who is now a senior. Knotts is much more than just a basketball player. "She's undoubtedly the best all-around athlete to ever come through here," said Frank Farrar, the head girls' basketball coach at RCHS. "I mean you figure she's captain of the (Class AA) All-State volleyball team, she's second in the state for pole vault for three years, third in the state 300 hurdles...won 21 of 22 games as a pitcher in softball. There's no sport she can't play and excel at." Knotts credits her parents (Todd and Sue) for that competitive drive and success. "Knowing how competitive they were and knowing how school-based they were, too," said Knotts of her dad and mom - both teachers, coaches and former college athletes. "Knowing that I need to go to a school for academics; that's what's really influenced me and they've been great." In addition to being a four-sport star, she's a 4.0 student. Her career goal is broadcasting. "We actually have Mrs. Kirby and she's a great person to teach us about everything," said Knotts. "She teaches us the legal aspect, the production, the anchoring, the writing. She teaches us a little bit about everything. I think where I fell in love with that was because she's such a great teacher. Plus, just hands-on it's so much fun." Knotts isn't sure about playing a sport at the next level. One thing is certain though: one of Roane county's brightest and best has a bright future with the best yet to come. |
