All games are a learning experience. And Alex Cole knows he and his returning teammates learned plenty in last season's Class AA title game loss to Wyoming East.
"We can't start slow like we did when we were down what, 20-4, in the first quarter. We had to fight our way back, we had to press them and that was a great learning experience," said Cole, a Ravenswood senior getting set to start this third year. "Because it gave us experience in the state tournament that could help us out a lot this year."
Cole is known as a defensive catalyst, but realizes he must step up offensively this year.
"More offensive production (is expected), because we lost Dusty (Mullins) and Ben (Wise) last year. Dusty was (Class AA) All-State captain and averaged 20 points a game. Ben was our point guard and averaged 12 points a game. So, we need more points."
A key to his success is running. He's been a part of four state championship cross country teams at Ravenswood and in track season Cole has contributed to five different relay teams that captured first place at the state meet.
"Running up and down the court, although it's not the same kind of shape it still helps you tremendously," said Cole. "I've had a lot of luck being with a group of guys that can also run and be a part of that team."
Cole would like to head south for college and possibly continue running, but at the moment his focus is on the basketball court.
"I most definitely want to get back to the state tournament," said Cole, "and bring home another state championship."
