In his only season as GW's starting quarterback, Taylor Norman has come a long, long way. Norman and his Patriot teammates will take on South Charleston Saturday at noon for the West Virginia Class AAA state championship inside Wheeling Island Stadium.
No. 1 SC is 13-0 while No. 2 GW is 12-1. GW's only loss was to the Black Eagels.
"He is a good guy, he's a great kid and he's done a wonderful job for us," said assistant Steve Edwards, Sr. of Norman. "Skill-wise and making the right decisions, he's a big part of where we are now."
Norman has become a proven passer this season for the Class AAA state championship-bound Patriots.
"I feel like any time you get a chance to have game experience you get better every game," said Norman. "I feel like as the season progressed, I've gotten better. From in-game experience and being in the pocket, stuff like that. I feel pleased with where I'm at right now. I feel like I can top it all off if we can win a state championship."
He has aspirations of being a lawyer and just like his play on the field, Norman has emerged in the classroom.
"The beginning of high school it was a little tough getting used to the high school thing from middle school," he said. "I feel I've gotten better with study habits and stuff like that. You've got to mesh football and sports (with class work). It was tough at first but I've gotten a hold of it."
And as a sharp guy, Norman knows he's one of the lucky ones getting a chance to be a part of high school football's final weekend.
"It's like a bowl week," he said of state championship preparations. "I know a lot of people that's going up to Wheeling. We're just really, really looking forward to the game."
