School: Wayne High School Primary Sport: Football Another year, another round of the playoffs for the Wayne Pioneers. It's something Joey Ferguson dreamed about being a part of while coming up through the ranks. "When I was little I saw the program being built and I knew I wanted to be a part of it," said Ferguson. "So, I've worked hard and here I am in my last senior year and want to do the best I can." Ferguson was a part of the state championship team in 2006. "That was great," he said. "That was a great experience for everyone and I'm hungry for another one." With Ferguson behind center, Wayne has gone to the air more in the past couple of years. But that's not important, he really doesn't care what plays are called by the coaches. "It's not the yards, it's the wins I'm looking for," he said. "I really don't care about rushing yards and passing yards." Ferguson has maintained outstanding grades during his days at Wayne High School. "You've just got to keep your nose clean, do what you're supposed to in class and out of class - just be a good kid." A big challenge is ahead Friday night with Bluefield's tradition-rich program coming to town. But Wayne has a lot to be proud of in football, as well. And Joey Ferguson hopes he can keep his days in the Red and Black alive for another week. |
