School: Ravenswood High School Primary Sport: Cross Country On Saturday Ravenswood High's boys' cross country team did it again. The Red Devils won a 9th straight Class AA-A state title. It's the fourth longest winning streak for state championships in West Virginia high school sports history. Senior Nathan Rees, led the way for championship number nine. When the gun fired early Saturday morning Ravenswood wasn't the favorite to win the '08 title. Rees and company were determined to prove the doubters wrong. "I was in third grade when these guys started winning. I didn't even know what cross country was," said Rees. "I started running when I got in middle school. They were like, 'Hey, if you keep working hard this is what you can do.' So, we just decided as a group of seniors that we were going to do it again and prove everyone wrong that thought we couldn't." Rees finished second overall in Saturday's race. "I wanted to finish above what I was predicted. I was predicted fourth and I got that accomplished," he said. "And I think my team followed my footsteps in performing as well or better than expected." Head coach Bryan Canterbury added: "Nathan has just had, he just finished one great year. He's been non-stop training since the start of cross country season last year." Rees owns a 3.75 GPA and his goal is to one day work in the classroom. "I want to be a teacher in secondary education hopefully and teach English and math," he said. "He's a proven leader...and in 2008 he led the way as Ravenswood kept its incredible streak alive. |
