Student: Matt Mellert
School: Ripley High School
Primary Sport: Football

He is small in stature but Matt Mellert plays big on the field. And this senior season is one Mellert wants to treasure.

"We've had a lot of guys in the weight room all winter and all spring working real hard," said Mellert. "That's going to help us a lot, we're just going to have to work hard in practice and outwork our opponents."

Mellert gained loads of experience during his junior year.

"Most of the receiver positions I can play any of them, and it's going to be a big part of this year and it's going to help me a lot," he said.
He plays big on both sides of the ball and contributes in the special teams' area. He's a solid player, but where he really shines is in the classroom.

"I spend a lot of time at night studying. I have to (in order) to keep my grades up," said Mellert. "I have a 4.2 (grade point average) and I'm course to be valedictorian if I can keep all A's this year."

Math and science are his favorites, but Mellert says he enjoys all classes. He's got his sights set high and hopes to combine football with academics at the next level.

"If I get the opportunity to play Division II (or) Division III football somewhere I'd take them up on that," he said.

Regardless of what the future holds, one thing is certain: you can count on Matt Mellert coming up big.
