Mark Martin's Notepad

Dan Hose Was One Nice Human Being
February 2, 2012

Mark Martin When I think of the late Dan Hose, a smile comes to mind.

That's because it was hard not to see Dan wearing his own warm, friendly smile.

I had been reading Dan Hose for years when finally my chance came to meet him at the 1984 West Virginia State High School Boys' Basketball Tournament. I introduced myself, a first-year broadcaster out of Marietta College.

Dan grew up in Marietta, Ohio. Thus, a friendship was born.

But it was hard not to be friends with Dan. The man genuinely liked everyone he encountered.

He was a big-time sportswriter in West Virginia as the Sports Editor for United Press International. Yet, Dan never big-timed anyone.

Dan's start in the newspaper business occurred near his hometown as the Sports Editor of the Parkersburg News. He then worked for the Marietta Times. He then served in the military.

After the service, Dan came to Charleston as a sportswriter for the Charleston Daily Mail. In 1966, he moved on to UPI and was there until the Mountain State's operation closed in 1990.

Dan remained very much a part of the sports scene in West Virginia. He free lanced for AP and served as the media room host at the very State Basketball Tournament where we first met.

He was a gem. He had an incredible memory bank when it came to West Virginia sports history. I tried to soak up as much knowledge as possible when talking with Dan.

I remember one winter day, the two of us each enjoyed a hot fudge sundae at the Shoney's on the Boulevard. We conversed about sports for probably well over an hour.

Dan stayed quite active with the West Virginia Sportswriters Association. Dan was always the man giving the opening and closing prayers.

Dan Hose was a good Christian man, as good as they come.

He will be missed.
