TORONTO Minnesota keeps failing to pressure Detroit in the AL Central. Jose Bautista hit a solo homer, Brett Cecil won his final start of the season and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Twins 3-2. Minnesota, which remained 5« games back of the Tigers, has not won consecutive games since a three-game winning streak from Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The Twins went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position and are averaging just 3.2 runs during their past 10 games. Royals 7, Tigers 4. KANSAS CITY, Mo. Alex Gordon and Alberto Callaspo homered, leading the last-place Kansas City Royals past the Detroit Tigers 7-4 for a surprising three-game sweep of the AL Central leaders. It was the first three-game sweep of an American League team at home this season for the Royals. They've won four straight overall for the first time since June 12-16. Zach Miner gave up three runs and five hits in relief for the Tigers, who rolled into town Tuesday on a six-game winning streak, fresh off a three-game sweep at Tampa Bay. Not only had the Royals dropped four straight, they were missing injured pitchers Gil Meche and Brian Bannister and had lost 24 of their last 33 to Detroit at home. Angels 3, Mariners 0. ANAHEIM, Calif. John Lackey pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game of the season, Torii Hunter broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0 to move a season-best 29 games over .500. Lackey struck out seven and walked one to help the Angels increase their AL West lead to five games over idle Texas. The right-hander has allowed one earned run in 26 innings over his last three starts. Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki was 0 for 4 and still needs four hits to reach the 200 mark for the ninth consecutive season, which would break the major league mark he shares with Wee Willie Keeler .
DENVER Garrett Atkins hit a two-run homer and Jason Giambi had a two-run double in a five-run third inning, sending the Colorado Rockies to their seventh straight win, 5-1 over the Cincinnati Reds. The NL wild card leaders increased their cushion to 4« games over idle San Francisco and crept within two games of first-place Los Angeles in the NL West. The Dodgers also had the day off. Seth Smith kept up his torrid hitting with an RBI single in the third. He had a game-winning, two-run single in the ninth the night before. By sweeping four games from the Reds, the Rockies wrapped up a 9-1 homestand _ one of their best in franchise history. Now, Colorado embarks on a nine-game road trip that includes three in San Francisco. Nationals 8, Phillies 7. WASHINGTON Ian Desmond homered and drove in four runs in his major league debut and Livan Hernandez pitched into the eighth inning, leading the Washington Nationals to an 8-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The NL East-leading Phillies, who began the day with a six-game edge over Florida, had won nine straight against Washington. The Nationals won for only the second time in 12 games overall. Desmond, a 24-year-old shortstop who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, had a fourth-inning RBI double and a three-run homer to key a five-run fifth. He narrowly missed a home run in his first at-bat, flying out to deep center field. Marlins 13, Mets 4. NEW YORK Nick Johnson drove in four runs and the Florida Marlins beat the listless New York Mets 13-4 to gain ground on the NL East-leading Phillies. Hanley Ramirez and Cody Ross each had three hits and two RBIs for the Marlins, who completed their first sweep of the Mets since taking four straight Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2004, in New York. Dan Uggla hit his 27th homer in the third inning. Florida went 5-1 on its six-game trip and moved within five games of Philadelphia, which lost 8-7 at Washington. The Marlins also remained 5« games back of the wild card-leading Rockies with 22 games remaining, including six against the Phillies. Braves 9, Astros 7. HOUSTON Garret Anderson drove in three runs, Nate McLouth homered and the Atlanta Braves broke out of their offensive slump with a 9-7 win over Roy Oswalt and the Houston Astros. Brian McCann had four hits and two RBIs for the Braves, who chased the Astros' ace after two innings and finished with 16 hits, two shy of their season high. Lance Berkman hit a three-run homer for the Astros, who lost for the third time in Oswalt's last 13 starts. The Braves had averaged 1.67 runs and batted .153 in their previous six games, but led 3-0 after 12 pitches from Oswalt . |
