Hurricane High School has had its share of fine coaches through the years.
One of the finest was Steve Whaley.
The long-time leader of various Hurricane High sports teams died on August 25 following a long illness at the age of 70.
Whaley was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson and WVU. He broke the state shot put record while in high school.
He moved on to compete in the shot at WVU and set another record, which stood from 1965-1980.
Among the many outstanding athletes "Whale" coached while at Hurricane High was current Marshall head football coach Doc Holliday.
Recently, Holliday reflected on his time under the guidance of Coach Whaley.
