At a golfing venue a guy named Sam helped bring fame, another Sam has won one of West Virginia's premiere golfing events.

Hurricane's Sam O'Dell etched his name into Mountain State golf lore by winning the 94th annual West Virginia State Amateur on Thursday at The Greenbrier.

O'Dell scored a 6-over 76 on the Old White TPC for a four-day total of 279 to outdistance Woody Woodward of Bridgeport and Hurricane's Brian Anania by six shots. Woodward had the low round of the day with a 67.

Woodward and Anania ended with four-day totals of 285

O'Dell, who had finished second at the West Virginia Open earlier in the summer, led after the first three rounds and despite a tough final 18 maintained his advantage for his first-ever State Am crown.
