State Meet Gets Going In Charleston

The West Virginia State High School Track and Field Meet is underway in Charleston.
Cabell Midland sensation Jacob Burcham, in his final meet, helped lead the Knights to a win in the 4x800 meter relay while setting a new state record and also closed out the first day with a win in the Class AAA 3200 meters.
The Knights lead the Class AAA boys standings with 32 points while Jefferson is second with 29. Ritchie is out in front in Class AA with 31 followed by Roane County at 21. Doddridge has 35 and Williamstown produced 24 on day one in Class A.
In the girls division, Buckhannon-Upshur's 45 is tops among Class AAA teams to easily outdistance second place Morgantown's 18. Bridgeport has 30 in Class AA with Oak Glen at 21. Williamstown is also the leader of Class A girls at 36 with Tucker County next in line at 30.
Also from Friday, Hurricane's girls captured a first-ever spot in the State Softball Tournament with a 2-0 win over St. Albans. Buffalo also won by a final of 2-0 over Doddridge County in a Class A regional final. The State Tournament is next week.
In high school baseball, both South Charleston in Class AAA and Herbert Hoover in Class AA moved on to next week's regionals.
The Power won over Lexington, while both WVU and Marshall lost in college baseball.
