CLASS A CHAMPIONSHIP:
Aaron Muncy scored 21 points to lead Tug Valley to a 58-41 win over Charleston Catholic in the Class A championship game Saturday. Austin Brewer added 15 points and Mikey Newsome scored 10 for top-seeded Tug Valley It was certain one of the teams would win a second consecutive state crown. Tug Valley took the Class AA title last year before dropping down to Class A. Charleston Catholic won in Class A a year ago. But there was no repeat of 2012's scoring drought, when Charleston Catholic beat St. Marys 40-34 in the lowest-ever scoring Class A championship game. Tug Valley (25-3) took the lead for good midway through the second quarter and pulled away after that. Nick George had 13 points for third-seeded Charleston Catholic (24-4). CLASS AA CHAMPIONSHIP: Anthony Eades scored 27 points and Bluefield beat Fairmont Senior 63-43 in the Class AA championship game on Saturday. Top-seeded Bluefield made up for the disappointment of losing to Tug Valley in last year's championship game. Bluefield (25-3) went ahead to stay midway through the first quarter and used a 17-7 run, including nine points by Eades, to finish the first half and lead 36-23 at halftime. Bluefield won the third championship in school history, adding to titles in 1995 and 1996. Corey Coppola and Lykel Collier each added 12 points for Bluefield, which shot 50 percent (24 of 48) from the floor. Jarin Hilson scored 11 points and Austin Norman had 10 for second-seeded Fairmont Senior (21-7). Fairmont Senior was held to its lowest point total of the season. CLASS AAA CHAMPIONSHIP: Donte' Grantham had 20 points and 17 rebounds, and Martinsburg nearly squandered a 17-point lead and held on to beat Woodrow Wilson 57-52 for the Class AAA championship Saturday night. Top-seeded Martinsburg (26-2) adds to titles it won in 2009 and 1994. Second-seeded Woodrow Wilson (23-5) was trying for its 17th state championship and first since 2008. Martinsburg never trailed. Woodrow Wilson trimmed the big deficit to two points with under 2 minutes remaining but couldn't take the lead. Jalen Lewis added 13 points for Martinsburg. Andrew Johnson led Woodrow Wilson with 19 points and freshman Nequan Carrington scored 12. Martinsburg seemed to be in control after Lewis capped an 8-0 run with a 3-pointer for a 45-28 lead with 3:13 left in the third quarter. But Martinsburg made just one field goal the rest of the game. Woodrow Wilson scored 14 straight points to pull within 45-42 with 4:28 remaining in the game. Martinsburg then made six straight free throws over a 42-second span to push the lead to nine, but Woodrow Wilson wasn't done. Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 3:18 left and Woodrow Wilson teammate Dai Dai Fortune made four free throws to trim the deficit to 51-49 with 1:37 left. Again, Martinsburg answered. After Lewis made a free throw with 52 seconds remaining, Jordan Robinson made a steal and fed Lewis for a layup with 42 seconds left. Another Johnson 3-pointer pulled Woodrow Wilson within 55-52 with 15 seconds left, but Grantham made two free throws for Martinsburg to secure the win. Martinsburg made 10 of 14 free throws over the final four minutes.
