The Mountaineers and Thundering Herd were both at home on Wednesday night and the two each came away with a win.
West Virginia, playing at home for the first time this season, defeated VMI, 94-69. Six different players scored in double figures for the Mountaineers.
In Huntington, Dennis Tinnon had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds as Marshall downed Morehead State, 70-67, in the I-64 rivalry for the Ellis Johnson trophy.
WVU moved to 2-3 with its win, while Marshall is now 4-3.
