The George Washington Patriots last won a state football championship 30 years ago.
The 2012 team is still alive in bringing the school on The Hill a second title. If GW meets two-time defending state champion Martinsburg on Friday afternoon in a Class AAA semifinal. The contest at Martinsburg High School's Cobourn Field is set for 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs earned their second straight crown last year by knocking off GW, 35-27. This time around only one will be in Wheeling next weekend to vy for the 2012 title. The winner will advance on to Wheeling Island Stadium and will face off with the Morgantown-Cabell Midland survivor on December 1 at noon. Morgantown and Cabell Midland meet on Friday night at 7:30 at Knight Stadium on the CM campus in Ona. Hear what GW head coach Steve Edwards, Jr. has to say about this year's showdown with Martinsburg, which is trying to become the first Class AAA school since old Charleston High School to win three straight AAA titles. CHS did it from 1969-71. Also, Dana Holgorsen and Doc Holliday get set to take their teams on the road.
