WV Boys State Tournamentfrom Eyewitness News Online Semifinal Friday; Winners Advance To Championship Saturday
Just call it moving day at the 97th annual West Virginia Boys State High School Basketball Tournament. The teams that win move on to Championship Saturday.
The day started with a Class AA showdown between No. 2 Oak Hill and No. 3 Weir. The Red Devils from Fayette County advance to the title game for the first time in seven years with a 61-45 win. Oak Hill's top scorer was Kalif Wright with 24. Oak Hill has two state titles, both coming when the school was Class AAA. In Class A No. 2 Parkersburg Catholic followed by punching its ticket to the state title game. The Crusaders handed No. 3 Tucker County just its second loss of the season, 54-41. John Padden had 20 points for PC. The Crusaders move on to the championship for the first time since 2003. PC's only title came in 1999. The second AA game saw No. 1 seed Wyoming East earn a trip to the title game for a fifth straight year with a thrilling, 67-63, win over No. 4 Tug Valley. Wyoming East and Oak Hill will meet for a fifth time this season. Wyoming East defeated the Red Devils in three of the first four, including a convincing, 60-36, win in the Sectional Final. The first of two Class AAA semifinals saw No. 1 seed Logan battle from behind to knock off No. 4 Capital, 75-69. Logan last played (and won) in the Class AAA title game in 1990. In game five of the day, Charleston Catholic made its way back into the Class A state championship for a sixth straight year with a 59-48 victory over Wheeling Central to earn the right to play Parkersburg Catholic.
