I CLINTON SIMPSON
THE TRIAL HAS BEGUN FOR A CHARLESTON MAN ACCUSED OF SETTING HIS WIFE'S HOUSE ON FIRE, WITH TWO TEENAGERS ALSO INSIDE. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER LESLIE RUBIN WAS IN THE COURTROOM AS DEFENSE ATTORNEYS WERE DRIVING HOME THE POINT THAT NO ONE ACTUALLY SAW CLINTON SIMPSON SET THE FIRE....

Return to Story Index

LESLIE @ KIOSK
RIGHT RICK, AND THAT'S THE DEFENSE THEY'RE GOING WITH HERE. THERE ARE PLENTY OF WITNESSES THAT SAY THEY SAW HIM DOUSING THE HOUSE WITH GASOLINE - BUT NO ONE WHO SAW HIM SET THE FIRE. AND DEFENSE ATTORNEYS ARE USING THAT TO TRY TO PERSUADE A JURY THAT HE'S NOT GUILTY OF FIRST DEGREE ARSON.

THE FIRE BROKE OUT AROUND 3 0'CLOCK IN THE MORNING BACK IN JUNE AT JODY GILBERT'S HOME ON RANDOLPH STREET. SHE IS CLINTON SIMPSON'S WIFE. INSIDE THE HOME - GILBERT'S TEENAGE DAUGHTER, AND HER DAUGHTER'S BOYFRIEND...ALL TESTIFIED THAT THEY SAW SIMSPSON DUMPING GASOLINE AROUND THE HOME AND ON THE WINDOWS. APPARENTLY SIMPSON HAD JUST HEARD HIS WIFE WAS CHEATING ON HIM. THAT'S WHEN THEY SAW FLAMES AND ESCAPED FROM THE HOME. DEFENSE ATTORNEY'S SAY THE CHARLESTON POLICE CONDUCTED A SHOTTY INVESTIGATION AND THERE WERE OTHER PEOPLE THERE WHO COULD HAVE SET THE FIRE. BUT QUINTIN CALDWELL, ANOTHER WITNESS, SAYS HE HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR WHAT SIMPSON'S INTENTIONS WERE THAT NIGHT.

"He's messing with my wife. I'll burnthe expletive up. He was pretty adamant about it...he said it several times."

PROSECUTORS ALSO TELL ME THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME SIMPSON HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF VIOLENT ACTS TOWARD HIS WIVES. IN THE 90'S HE WAS CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER FOR RUNNING HIS CAR INTO A POST OFFICE, TRYING TO HURT A FORMER WIFE. HOWEVER, THOSE CHARGES WERE PLEADED DOWN TO MISDEMEANORS.

THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO WRAP UP TOMORROW. HE FACES UP TO TWENTY YEARS IN PRISON. REPORTING LIVE IN THE STUDIO, LRU, EYN.

COX COMPLAINED THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE TOLD HER ADKINS PLEAD GUILTY TO TWO COUNTS WHEN IN FACT HE ONLY ADMITTED TO THE SINGLE OF OFFENSE OF SEXUAL ABUSE BY A PARENT, GUARDIAN OR CUSTODIAN. THE SENTENCING HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER.

CONSUMER ALERT
IDENTITY THEFT IS BAD ENOUGH IF IT HAPPENS ONCE… BUT EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR JENNIFER MCANDREWS HAS THE STORY OF ONE WOMAN WHO WAS VICTIMIZED TWICE AND HOW YOU CAN AVOID A SIMILAR FATE.

    (Maria Chen, Fraud Victim)

"It's an ongoing thing, they steal your identity… it destroys your life."

MARIA CHEN KNOWS - HER IDENTITY WAS STOLEN ONLINE AND THE SUSPECT LITERALLY TOOK EVERYTHING.

"He had withdrawn all of my money out of the bank and opened up credit cards in my name."

MARIA'S BANK ALERTED HER. WHEN SHE FOUND OUT HER MONEY WAS GONE AND HER CREDIT DESTROYED AND SHE WAS ANGRY.

    (Maria Chen, Fraud Victim)

"My credit is still messed up because of him."

MARIA IMMEDIATELY WENT TO POLICE, WHO WERE ABLE TO TRACK DOWN THE SUSPECT AND ARREST HIM.

SHE ALSO PUT ALERTS ON HER ACCOUNTS - YET SOMEHOW WHEN THE SUSPECT GOT OUT OF JAIL - HE WAS ABLE TO USE HER PERSONAL INFORMATION YET AGAIN.

"The bad guys are calling in with all the personal identifying information of the victims…"

AND…ONCE THEY DO THAT, THEY ESSENTIALLY CAN GET ACCESS TO YOUR CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT.

THEY CAN ADD THEMELVES AS USERS GET THEIR OWN CARD WITH THEIR NAME ON IT AND START CHARGING ON YOUR ACCOUNT.

THE VICIOUS CYCLE STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN.

SOME ADVICE FROM POSTAL INSPECTORS: SAFEGUARD YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION AT ALL TIMES.

"One thing we always recommend is to check your credit once a year to make sure no fraudulent activity has happened."

"I've been trying to get my life back again… so I can continue on... but it's been very hard."

I'm Jennifer McAndrews for Eyewitness news
