    BABY STEPS 2/6
THERE'S A COMMON FEEDING PROBLEM PARENTS MAY ENCOUNTER WITH THEIR NEWBORNS... BUT IT MAY HAVE AN EASY SOLUTION.

EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR JENIFER MCANDREWS TAKES A LOOK AT HOW TO DEAL WITH INFANT REFLUX.

NEW BORN BABIES BRING WITH THEM, A NEW SET OF WORRIES FOR PARENTS. AND WITH OF ALL THE HEALTH ISSUES TO WATCH FOR AND BE AWARE OF... WHO WOULD DREAM FEEDING TIME COULD BE AN ISSUE?

ONE OF THE LEAST SUSPECTED PROBLEMS? IS REFLUX... IT'S SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T USUALLY START UNTIL A BABY IS 2 OR 3 WEEKS OLD. HERE'S WHAT PEDIATRICIAN JOE MATUSIC SAYS IS OKAY.

      Dr. Joe Matusic, MD, Pediatrician

I tell parents, it's normal to have a wet burp every meal. To spit up one mouth full once a day is probably okay. Once you go past that we get concerned the child may have reflux.

REFLUX IS ESSENTIALLY, A CHILD THAT SPITS UP, TOO MUCH... HERE'S HOW THAT'S MEASURED.

      Dr. Joe Matusic, MD

A mouthful two or three time a a day or especially if they throw up after every meal. Then we get concerned.

Here are few things to try to avoid the spit ups... if you're breast feeding try a different position. If you're bottle feeding, ask your doctor about adding rice cereal.

Try and burp the baby more frequently during feeding. And try feeding more frequently, but less at each meal. and pay attention to how you lay them down in the crib.

      Dr Joe Matusic, MD

After you feed them lay them on their belly with their head in the air about 45 degrees, put blankets under the mattress. That's the reflux position. The hardest position to throw up in.... and that seems to help out a bit.

THERE'S A MEDICINE AVAILABLE IF NOTHING ELSE HELPS THE BABY... IN SOME CASES, CERTAIN OVER THE COUNTER REMEDIES MAY BE PRESCRIBED... KEEP IN MIND, BABIES GENERALLY OUTGROW THE CONDITION IN A FEW MONTHS... YOU CAN GET MORE INFORMATION ON OUR WEBSITE-- WCHSTV.COM.

    I SNOW BUSINESS
A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE ASKING: WHERE IN THE WORLD IS WINTER? BUT WHILE SOME ARE ENJOYING THE MILD WEATHER, OTHERS DEPEND ON THE COLD AND SNOW TO MAKE A LIVING.

EYEWITNESS STORM TEAM METEOROLOGIST ASHLEY SMITH EXPLAINS WHY WE'RE MISSING OUT ON WINTER THIS YEAR...AND HOW SOME ARE MAKING DO IN THE SNOW BUSINESS.

Sun, sandals, and snow? It's been a mixed bag of weather this winter in the Mountain State BUT IT'S BEEN MOSTLY SNOW-FREE. With record setting warmth in both December and January, snow has been scarce especially in the lowlands. AND REACTION HAS BEEN MIXED.

      Tyson Corley

      Spring Hill

      38:12 I think we've been blessed!.. 38:24 I'm lovin it!

      Kim Silvernagel

      Patuxent River, MD

3:00 It was disappointing not to have as much snow .. There just hasn't been any to enjoy so I'm hoping it keeps snowing

57:6 it's been a bad winter for everyone

      *Nats of Plane*

There's no reason to fly south to find the warmth this year.

39:06 You hear people talking about moving down south for warmer weather but it seems like it came to us!

      *Nats of golf club*

Tyson Corley has been hitting the links all winter long. And he's not alone.

      Jeff Bryant

      Golf Course Manager

36:22 It's been wonderful for instance yesterday we did more business than we did all of last winter

But while this warm weather has been nice for golfers.. not so much for skiiers....

      *Nats of snow making*

Skiing is an estimated quarter-billion-dollar industry in West Virginia. An industry that relies on Mother Nature and Old Man Winter to bring in the big bucks.

Mark: 49:37 Skiing on the east coast is always a roll of the dice you just have to pray to mother nature and hope for the best. We're all optimists in this business, we know it's going to get cold and when it does we know we can make a lot of snow

      DAVE HUBER

      DIRECTOR OF SKI OPERATIONS, SNOWSHOE

44:42 This year's been a struggle compared to the last two winters. The weather hasn't been consistent for snow making.. We're about 86% open

Dave Huber is the Director of Ski Operations at Snowshoe Resort and is largely in charge of the snow making routine on 244 acres of ski slopes. As you might imagine, he's been very busy this year.

As of February 1st, Snowshoe received only 70 inches of snow. Of those 70 inches, 20 fell before they were even open in October. Their total snowfall is less than half of their seasonal average with their peak snowfall typically falling in January. With less natural snow, the resort is focrced to make more snow than usual. An investment that doesn't come cheap.

Joe: 27:54 We have invested millions upon millions of dollars in the last decade on snow making and keeping up to speed on that for years like this

THE UNUSUALLY Warm weather ALSO caused a delay in opening ALL OF WEST VIRGINIA'S SKI resorts.

JOE: 27:08 For the delay in opening we're still down about 10%, we've made up some numbers

FEWER people hitting the slopes also means FEWER people buying skiis, boots, snow gear, and even gloves.

Buddie: 34:54 It's a little slow right now

Clendenin says discounts at Sport Mart in Charleston have been OFFERED UP earlier this year than in the past. Another sign of bad snow business.

      So where's winter?

      *vids of weather graphics/explainers*

Taking a look at the big picture... this was the setup last year. A high pressure SYSTEM WAS parked over Greenland WHICH PUSHED cold air and snow south into our area. This year, the HIGH PRESSUE is not there SO THERE'S NOTHING PUSHING THAT COLD CANADIAN WEATHER SOUTH.

The result is record warmth and not a lot of snow.

Stand Up: While most of us are enjoying the mild winter in our neighborhoods, you don't have to go very far to find a winter wonderland in Snowshoe.

Joe: 29:01 that is our biggest challenge right now is convincing people in the metro areas that the daffodils are blooming in January and February and there's snow on the mountains

36:31 there's still skiing out there you just have to get away from this nice valley weather for golf and get into the ski resorts and ski

So if you are a winter weather lover, there are STILL plenty of places to hit the slopes without going too far..

Reporting in Snowshoe, Ashley Smith, Eyewitness News.

AS FAR AS WHAT FEBRUARY AND MARCH MIGHT HOLD, IN PAST YEARS LIKE 1993 WHEN WE HAD A MILD START TO WINTER WE DID GET A BLIZZARD IN MARCH. WHILE LONG TERM FORECASTS DON'T CALL FOR ANY MAJOR CHANGES, WE'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT MOTHER NATURE DISHES OUT.

    GAS PRICES
GAS PRICES ARE GOING UP AGAIN.

IT'S UP NEARLY 20 CENTS IN FOUR WEEKS. AND THERE ARE REPORTS GAS MAY COST FOUR DOLLARS OR MORE BY THE MONTH OF MAY.

HERE'S A LOOK AT WHICH CITIES WILL BE HIT HARDEST.

If you were driving the predictions might make you slam on your breaks Just in time for Memorial Day Weekend...the highest average gas prices this country has ever seen. SOT -- expert 160008 FOR NOW THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM is HERE. GFX 1: Prices that already seem sky high are about to get even higher... one estimate has an average price of $4.05 a gallon by May... another predicts $4.15... That menas by year's end American households with two cars could be shelling out as much as $300 more for gas than just last year. SOT: John Glassick - Los Angeles 161858 I can't afford those prices with everything else going up. Grocery store is going up, rents are going up... VEGA: Is that the sort of magical figure that makes you go, ok, drive less. MOS: 162451 I think $4 is kind of a good boundary between where you can tolerate and when you can't. And $4.15 a gallon-- for some American cities-- will seem like a bargain. Big cities will be hit especially hard... in some cases because of higher taxes, in others, because their distance from refineries. * GFX 2 Chicago could reach $4.95 a gallon. San Francisco-- $4.85 . Seattle-- $4.65 MOS-- it's tough because it makes you cut expenses. * GFX 3 Mounting tensions in Iran are only partly to blame for this springtime sticker shock. American drivers can also thank increased demand from China, refinery closures and our own never-ending need to drive. SOT gas buddy expert 160332 THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS: THAT AMERICANS WHO COMMUTE TO WORK STILL WILL NEED TO COMMUTE TO WORK SO THERE'S A REALLY A LIMITED AMOUNT OF THINGS, REALLY A LIMITED AMOUNT OF OPTIONS THAT AMERICANS CAN TAKE. (160354) * GFX 4 Except for buying other things For every 10 cent hike at the pump, economists say consumers cut other spending to the tune of 9 billion dollars.
