DESK LEAD-IN
YOU MIGHT WANT TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS...

KALLIE CART JOINS US A WARNING TONIGHT.

POLICE SAY THERE HAS BEEN A SPIKE IN PURSE SNATCHINGS AND OTHER PETTY CRIMES, ALL ACROSS THE AREA...

Return to Story Index

REPORTER WALK TO BAM
THEY'RE CLASSIFIED AS PETIT LARCENY -- BUT FOR THE VICTIMS, THE CRIMES CAN HAVE LASTING EFFECTS AND CAN CAUSE A MAJOR INCONVENIENCE...

219 i'm sure they were pros at what they were doing

BOBBIE LEGG OF CAMPBELLS CREEK IS JUST THE LATEST PERSON TO FALL VICTIM -- TO A PURSE SNATCHING!

SHE WAS WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS AT THE BOB EVANS IN KANAWHA CITY WEDNESDAY MORNING.. HER PURSE WAS ON THE FLOOR BESIDE HER CHAIR --

0052 i moved my chair bag and realized my handbag was gone

SHE SAYS TWO WOMEN IN A TABLE BEHIND HER, WHO DIDN'T ORDER ANYTHING, WERE SEEN ON SURVEILLANCE VIDEO GRABBING AND TAKING OFF WITH HER PURSE... IT HAD 100 DOLLARS CASH IN IT -- HER CELL PHONE, CAR KEYS -- AND ALL OF HER DEBIT AND CREDIT CARDS -- ONE OF WHICH THE WOMEN USED ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER AT THE EXXON IN MARMET --

300 Its just all your card and your id and my license and social security -- its a real headache and they probably don't even want it they just want your money

AND POLICE SAY THESE TYPES OF CRIMES ARE HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY...

1114 what is happening typically, these individuals are waiting for people to sit something down and they're not paying close attention to it wether it be a purse a wallet or a cell phone

622 and something you can do to prepare yourself in case this does ever happen to you: take stock of the credit cards you have and write down the numbers you need to call to get them cancelled or you can simply take a copy of the backs of all the credit cards

YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO ALSO CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT -- AND NEVER CARRY SENSITIVE DOCUMENTS LIKE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

BECAUSE -- AS LEGG NOW KNOWS -- PEOPLE ARE OUT THERE -- WAITING FOR VICTIMS TO LET DOWN THEIR GUARD.

717 IF THEY WOULD HAVE NEEDED MONEY I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT TO THEM

AND POLICE SAY JUST TRY TO BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS CLOSE TO YOU AND IN YOUR SIGHT.

INVESTIGATORS ARE WORKING TO GET THAT SURVEILLANCE VIDEO FROM BOB EVANS OF THOSE TWO PURSE SNATCHERS.

    HE'S HAMLIN'S MAYOR.

    A PASTOR.

AND THE PUTS ON A BADGE AS THE TOWNS POLICE CHIEF.

NATS "YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE TO STRAP IT ON AND TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS."

BUT SOME MEMBERS OF HIS CONGREGATION AT MORNING STAR CHURCH, FEEL AS IF HE OVERSTEPPED HIS BOUNDS, WHEN HE LOANED THE CHURCH BUS TO THE LINCOLN COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT TO MAKE A DRUG BUST.

    13:56:35

"I JUST ASSUMED IT WOULD BE OK TO DO. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED WITH THEM."

PASTOR WILKINSON SAYS AFTER HE RESIGNS...HE HOPES TO ACTUALLY PURCHASE THE BUS FROM THE CHURCH.

LINCOLN HIGH PROTEST
CONTINUING COVERAGE OUT OF LINCOLN COUNTY OVER A PROTEST THAT HAS LEFT SOME STUDENTS SUSPENDED.

TONIGHT THAT AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION WAS ON HAND MEETING WITH PARENTS AND STUDENTS.

SOME STUDENTS AT LINCOLN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL IN HAMLIN WERE SUSPENDED BECAUSE THEY STOOD UP AND DEMONSTRATED IN THE CAFETERIA AFTER LUNCH, DEMANDING THEY BE ALLOWED TO HOLD A MEMORIAL SERVICE AT THE SCHOOL FOR BLAKE DUNLAP.

BUT THE DISTRICT HAS DENIED THE REQUEST, ALLEGEDLY BECAUSE DUNLAP KILLED HIMSELF AND THE SCHOOL DOESN'T WANT TO GLORIFY SUICIDE.

TONIGHT THEY MET WITH AN A-C-L-U LAWYER BEHIND CLOSED DOORS TO DISCUSS THEIR RIGHTS.

"TO SEE WHAT THE RIGHTS OF OUR STUDENTS AND WHAT THEIR ALLOWED TO DO."

A PROTEST IS PLANNED FOR TOMORROW MORNING AT 7, OFF SCHOOL PROPTERY.

PASTOR PROTEST
A LOCAL PASTOR IS CAMPING OUT--TRYING TO BRING ATTENTION TO WHAT HE SAYS IS A NEED FOR HEALTHCARE IN RURAL PARTS OF LOGAN COUNTY.

EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR KERA MASHEK IS LIVE HERE IN OUR STUDIO TO EXPLAIN... KERA?

Return to Story Index

KERA @ KIOSK MON
PROTESTS ARE NOTHING NEW TO PASTOR MICHAEL POLLARD.

HE SAYS HIS HOME COMMUNITY OF MAN HAS BEEN BEGGING FOR EXPANDED HEALTHCARE SINCE LOSING ITS HOSPITAL 12 YEARS AGO...BUT A RECENT HIGHWAY CLOSURE IN LOGAN COUNTY IS DRAWING MORE ATTENTION TO THE NEED.

SINCE THE ONLY HOSPITAL IN MAN CLOSED MORE THAN A DECADE AGO--IT'S BEEN A STRUGGLE TO GET QUALITY HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN THE COMMUNITY.

A NEWER SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA HEALTH SYSTEM CLINIC IS HELPING--BUT PASTOR POLLARD SAYS WITH AN AGING POPULATION--MORE IS NEEDED.

AFTER THE OLD MAN HOSPITAL WAS DEMOLISHED LAST WINTER...THE COMMUNITY WAS TOLD THAT CLINIC WOULD BE EXPANDED TO HELP---WITH LONGER HOURS AND URGENT CARE SERVICES...AND THAT THERE WAS EVEN STATE MONEY TO HELP CONSTRUCT IT.

BUT ALMOST A YEAR LATER--IT STILL HASN'T BEEN BUILT...LEAVING THOSE HERE FRUSTRATED.

Pollard-With Obaamcare, the Affordable Care Act, now the law of the land--it's good, but if you don't have the facilities to facilitate and help the people, then we're just over the mountain and through the woods to grandma's house we have to go to get the help that we need.

..A NEED THAT'S ONLY BEEN MAGNIFIED THIS SUMMER--WITH ROUTE 10 CLOSED...AND AN HOUR LONG DETOUR TO GET TO THE CLOSEST HOSPITAL IN LOGAN.

SO POLLARD AND THE COMMUNITY HOPE THIS PROTEST WILL SPARK ACTION, TO GET MORE HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN MAN.

WE CONTACTED SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA HEALTH SYSTEM TO ASK ABOUT THE STATUS OF PLANS FOR EXPANDING OPERATIONS IN MAN--BUT OUR CALLS WERE NOT RETURNED.

MEANWHILE, PASTOR POLLARD IS WORKING TO SET UP A MEETING WITH THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE TO HELP GET THE BALL ROLLING.

REPORTING LIVE IN THE STUDIO, KERA MASHEK, EYEWITNESS NEWS.

I BREAKFAST MISCONCEPTION
WE'VE OFTEN BEEN TOLD THAT EATING A HEALTHY BREAKFAST HELPS YOU KEEP OFF THE POUNDS.

NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT THE CONVENTIONAL WISDOM ISN'T TRUE.

A REPORT PUBLISHED IN THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NUTRITION FOUND THAT SKIPPING YOUR FIRST MEAL OF THE DAY HAS LITTLE OR NO EFFECT ON WEIGHT GAIN.

THEY SAY RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN 1992 BY VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY SHOWS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN WEIGHT LOSS WAS HOW DRASTICALLY PEOPLE CHANGED THEIR EATING HABITS.

THE FINDINGS ALSO SHOWED THAT PEOPLE DO EQUALLY WELL WHETHER OR NOT THEY ATE BREAKFAST.

RESEARCHERS SAY THESE FINDINGS HAVE BEEN DROWNED OUT BY OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES THAT HAVE FOUND ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN BREAKFAST HABITS AND OBESITY, BUT NO REAL LINK.
