WEST VIRGINIA'S SOURCE FOR NEWS.... EYEWITNESS NEWS STARTS RIGHT NOW...

    SOT verbatim

A CALL TO ACTION... WHAT THE PRESIDENT HAD TO SAY ABOUT SYRIA AND HOW A FORMER MILITARY LEADER AND LOCAL WOMAN OF SYRIAN DESCENT REACT TO HIS REMARKS.

WELCOME
    GOOD EVENING, I'M ELIZABETH NOREIKA...

    AND I'M RICK LORD...

    THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS.

CRISIS IN SYRIA
PRESIDENT OBAMA LAYS OUT HIS ADMINISTRATION'S CASE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE...

    HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW TONIGHT...

DURING HIS SPEECH, THE PRESIDENT SAID HIS PLAN FOR ACTION IN SYRIA STILL INCLUDES A LIMITED MILITARY RESPONSE... A TARGETED STRIKE.

THE PRESIDENT SAYS WHILE HE HAS ALWAYS FAVORED A PEACEFUL RESOLUTION, HE IS NOT WILLING TO TAKE THE THREAT OF MILITARY ACTION OFF THE TABLE AT THIS TIME...

HE SAID IF THE UNITED STATES FAILS TO TAKE ACTION, THE ASSAD REGIME WOULD HAVE NO REASON TO RESIST USING MORE WEAPONS AGAINST ITS OWN PEOPLE...

THE PRESIDENT SAYS THE AUGUST 21ST CHEMICAL ATTACK THAT KILLED AN ESTIMATED 14-HUNDRED INNOCENT PEOPLE WAS A GAME CHANGER THAT CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION...

IN AN ATTEMPT TO UNIFY SUPPORT FROM EACH SIDE OF THE AISLE, THE PRESIDENT MADE A CONCISE PITCH ABOUT WHY HIS PLAN IS THE BEST POSSIBLE PATH TO TAKE...

"To my friends on the right, I ask you to reconcile your commitment to America's military might with a failure to act when a cause is so plainly just. To my friends on the left, I ask you to reconcile your belief in freedom and dignity for all people with those images of children writhing in pain and going still on a cold hospital floor. Sometimes resolutions and statements of condemnation are simply not enough. Indeed, I'd ask every member of Congress, and those of you watching at home tonight, to view those videos of the attack and then ask what kind of world would we live in if the United States of America sees a dictator brazenly violate international law with poison gas, and we choose to look the other way."

I SYRIAN PPL REAX
OF COURSE--SYRIAN NATIONALS WERE TAKING A SPECIAL INTEREST IN THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH TONIGHT.

EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR KERA MASHEK IS LIVE HERE IN THE STUDIO--WITH THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE ROAD AHEAD.

Return to Story Index

KERA @ KIOSK
TONIGHT I WATCHED THE PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS WITH DNAA SHAMMAA.

SHE'S LIVED IN THE UNITED STATES ALL HER LIFE--BUT IS OF SYRIAN DESCENT, AND CONSIDERS THE COUNTRY HER SECOND HOME...WITH MANY FAMILY AND FRIENDS STILL LIVING THERE.

SHAMMAA IS DISAPPOINTED THE PRESIDENT'S POSTPONEMENT ON ASKING CONGRESS FOR THE "OKAY" TO USE MILITARY FORCE IN SYRIA...AND FEARS IT LEAVES THE WINDOW WIDE OPEN TO MORE KILLINGS.

Return to Story Index

P SYRIAN PPL REAX
HE'S LIVED HERE FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS--BUT FOR ALMOST THREE YEARS HAS WATCHED MISERY UNFOLD IN HIS HOME COUNTRY OF SYRIA.

DR. HOSSINO EVEN GOT AN UP-CLOSE VIEW OF THE BLOODSHED ON A MEDICAL MISSION TO THE MIDDLE EAST LAST SUMMER.

TUESDAY--A GLIMMER OF HOPE...WITH NEWS THAT SYRIA'S PRESIDENT BASHAR AL ASSAD WOULD WORK WITH RUSSIA TO GET RID OF ITS CHEMICAL WEAPONS SUPPLY.

BUT FOR SYRIANS HERE IN AMERICA--THAT NEWS WAS HARD TO BELIEVE.

THAT'S WHY SHAMMAA WAS HOPING PRESIDENT OBAMA AND CONGRESS WOULD AUTHORIZE MILITARY ACTION IN SYRIA..HOPING IT WOULD SLOW THE BLOODSHED, AND PUSH ASSAD OUT OF OFFICE.

NOW AFTER HEARING THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH, SHE'S HEARTBROKEN A CONGRESSIONAL VOTE ON STRIKING IS BEING POSTPONED...AND FEARFUL ABOUT THE FUTURE OF HER SECOND HOME...WITH BARELY A SHRED OF HOPE THAT DIPLOMACY WILL WORK.

Shammaa- The delay, the delay, the delay, you know, it's not going to...all it's doing is letting him kill more and more innocent people. A hundred thousand people have already died in other ways, other than the chemical weapons. So I don't see this as a way of resolving the issue.

SHAMMAA SAYS SHE IS NOW LEFT TO KEEP PRAYING FOR SYRIA...AND THE REBEL SOLDIERS--HOPING THEY WILL UTLIMATELY BE ABLE TO FINISH THE JOB--WITH OR WITHOUT U-S HELP...TO GET ASSAD OUT OF POWER...IN THE SAME WAY UPRISINGS TOSSED LEADERS IN EGYPT AND LIBYA.

BUT WITH A STRONG REGIME THAT'S BEEN RULING SYRIA FOR 40 YEARS, THAT IS A DAUNTING TASK.

IN THE STUDIO, KERA MASHEK, EYEWITNESS NEWS.

I TACKETT ON SYRIA
ACCORDING TO MOST NATIONAL POLLS, A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS OPPOSE A MILITARY STRIKE ON SYRIA.

BUT DOES THAT INACTION MAKE US LOOK WEAK?

RETIRED WEST VIRGINIA NATIONAL GUARD ADJUTANT GENERAL ALLEN TACKETT WEIGHS IN ON THE IMPACTS OF MILITARY ACTION IN SYRIA.

"I certainly think he put on the facts on the table..people know he drew a red line several months ago..and said the us would be forced to us military action...now that weapons have been used no action has taken place..and that's going to be a tough sell for him"

MU SYRIA REAX
THE CRISIS IN SYRIA IS STILL THE HEATED TOPIC IN HIGH SCHOOL AND ESPECIALLY COLLEGE CLASSROOMS.

TONIGHT, EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR DAVE BENTON TAKES US TO A "PUBLIC OPINION AND PROPAGANDA" CLASS AT MARSHALL UNIVERSITY... WHERE STUDENTS HAVE MIXED REACTIONS ON THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS.

DR. MARYBETH BELLER TOLD HER POLITICAL SCIENCE STUDENTS LAST WEEK... THE U.S. SHOULD PROCEED WITH CAUTION REGARDING SYRIA. TODAY, SHE'S GLAD WE HAVE.

THIS CLASSROOM IS FILLED WITH POLITICAL SCIENCE ANDJOURNALISM STUDENTS... AND THEY'V BEEN LEARNING ABOUT SYRIA AND OUR POTENTIAL INVOLVEMENT FOR THE PAST COUPLE WEEKS. HERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT VIEWPOINTS REGARDING THE U.S. INVOLVEMENT.

BELLER SAYS MOVING TOWARD A DIPLOMATIC RESOLUTION WAS THE PRESIDENT'S GOAL.

MARYBETH BELLER-40:22-THE PRESIDENT'S GOAL COULD BE ACHIEVED AND ACHIEVED WITHOUT USE OF MILITARY STRIKES. I THINK THIS IS THE BEST OF ALLPOSSIBLE WORLDS.

IN HUNTINGTON, DAVE BENTON EYEWITNESS NEWS.

G WHAT'S NEXT
    SO HERE'S WHAT'S NEXT...

U-S SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY PLANS TO TRAVEL TO SWITZERLAND THIS THURSDAY TO MEET WITH RUSSIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER TO DISCUSS THE RUSSIAN PROPOSAL THAT WOULD ALLOW SYRIA TO AVOID U-S MILITARY ACTION BY RELINQUISHING ALL OF ITS CHEMICAL WEAPONS... MEANWHILE, NO DEFINITIVE TIME HAS BEEN SET YET FOR CONGRESS TO VOTE ON ANY POTENTIAL MILITARY STRIKE
