    AN ELDERLY COUPLE ROBBED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT... NOW FEAR FOR THEIR SAFETY...HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW.

    IN THE MIDDLE OF NIGHT, POLICE SAY THIEVES BROKE INTO A HOME IN THE CABIN CREEK AREA.

    IT HAPPENED WHILE AN ELDERLY COUPLE WERE SOUND ASLEEP.

    THE COUPLE SAY THEIR DOOR WAS LOCKED... WHICH MEANS THE THIEVES GOT IN THROUGH A WINDOW.

    NOT ONLY DID THEY LOSE MONEY AND TOOLS... BUT ALSO PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION.

    TONIGHT, WE TAKE YOU TO CABIN CREEK AND HEAR FIRST HAND FROM MR. AND MRS. HARPER... ABOUT A CRIME THAT'S LEFT THEM ON EDGE.

    MEET IRENE AND BUNIE HARPER. THEY'VE LIVED IN CABIN CREEK 55 YEARS... AND SAY THEY'VE NEVER BEEN CRIME TARGETS.. UNTIL THIS WEEKEND.

    THE HARPER'S DID LOCK THEIR DOOR... BUT THE THIEVES CAME THROUGH THIS WINDOW... AND STOLE SEVERAL ITEMS INCLUDING BIRTHDAY MONEY.

    IRENE HARPER-15:05-I HAD A BIRTHDAY CARD FROM MY SON DUSTIN, THEY OPENED IT UP AND TOOK 50 DOLLARS OUT AND SEALED IT BACK UP!

    AFTER THIEVES GOT AWAY WITH CASH... THEY HIT THE GARAGE.

    BUNIE HARPER / CABIN CREEK - 11:27-THEY BROKE IN THE GARAGE RIPPED LOCK OFF GARAGE WENT IN GARAGE. TOOK A CHAINSAW.

    RANDY LAWRENCE / CABIN CREEK - 28:29-YES I'M WORRIED SINCE THEY BROKE INTO MY NEIGHBORS OVER THERE.

    RANDY LAWRENCE LIVES IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD... BUT SAYS HE'S ON GUARD.

    LAWRENCE-28:34-IF THEY WALK IN, THEY AIN'T WALING OUT. I GUARANTEE THEM THAT.

    THE SUSPECTS ARE STILL ON THE RUN... AND THE HARPERS SAY THEY'RE CONCERNED KANAWHA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES DIDN'T RESPOND.

    WE CONTACTED THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE... AND WERE TOLD THERE WILL BE AN INVESTIGATION... BUT THE HOME INVASION HAS LEFT THE HARPER'S ON EDGE.

    THE SUSPECTS ALSO STOLE PRESCRIPTION PAIN KILLERS... BUT THE HARPERS SAY POLICE TOLD THEM THEY HAVE TO TAKE A LIE DETECTOR TEST BEFORE THEY CAN GET MORE MEDICATIONS...WHICH POLICE SAY IS STANDARD IN SUCH CASES.

    DEPUTIES SAY 33-YEAR-OLD DALE EDWARD LOWTHER JUNIOR.. SHOT GARY HUBBARD *THREE TIMES*.. WHILE HE WAS DRIVING ON PRENTER ROAD THURSDAY NIGHT.

    THEY SAY THE NEIGHBORS HAVE A HISTORY OF FIGHTING, ALTHOUGH THEY'RE UNSURE OF AN EXACT MOTIVE IN THE SHOOTING.

    LOWTHER INITIALLY CLAIMED HUBBARD RAN HIM OVER WITH HIS JEEP...PROMPTING HIM TO FIRE 10 SHOTS...BUT DEPUTIES BELIEVE LOWTHER MADE THAT STORY UP EITHER IN AN ATTEMPT TO JUSTIFY THE SHOOTING, OR THROW OFF THEIR INVESTIGATION.

LHS STUDENT PROTEST
    A GROUP OF LINCOLN COUNTY STUDENTS ARE PROTESTING--UPSET THEY'RE BEING BANNED FROM MOURNING THE DEATH OF A FRIEND AT THEIR SCHOOL.

    SEVERAL STUDENTS ARE NOW IN TROUBLE WITH LINCOLN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL IN HAMLIN BECAUSE THEY STOOD UP AND DEMONSTRATED IN THE CAFETERIA AFTER LUNCH....DEMANDING THEY BE ALLOWED TO HOLD A MEMORIAL SERVICE AT THE SCHOOL FOR BLAKE DUNLAP.

    BUT THE DISTRICT HAS DENIED THE REQUEST--ALLEGEDLY BECAUSE DUNLAP KILLED HIMSELF...AND THE SCHOOL DOESN'T WANT TO GLORIFY SUICIDE.

    STUDENTS ARE FRUSTRATED BECAUSE OTHER CLASSMATES WHO HAVE DIED HAVE BEEN HONORED AT THE SCHOOL WITH CANDLELIGHT VIGILS AND BALLOON RELEASES, AMONG OTHER THINGS...

    THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS SAID ITS REVIEWING DISCIPLINARY MEASURES FOR STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THE PROTEST.

    ...BUT THOSE STUDENTS CLAIM THEY'VE ALREADY FACED PENALTIES RANGING FROM SUSPENSION...TO BEING BANNED FROM SCHOOL DANCES AND EVEN WALKING AT GRADUATION.

    SAIRA BLAIR FILED PRE-CANDIDACY PAPERS TO RUN FOR THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES AUG. 5.

    BLAIR IS THE DAUGHTER OF DAUGHTER OF SEN. CRAIG BLAIR, A BERKELEY REPUBLICAN. WHO SHE HAS QUIETLY WORKED ALONGSIDE OF THROUGHOUT HIS CAMPAIGNS. SHE CREDITS THE PUSH TO RUN THIS YEAR FROM HER RECENT EXPERIENCE WITH THE YOUTH IN A GOVERNMENT PROGRAM THAT PUTS 200 STUDENTS FROM THROUGHOUT THE STATE IN CHARLESTON.

    BLAIR WILL TURN 18 IN TIME TO MEET STATE REQUIREMENTS TO RUN FOR THE HOUSE.

    MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia University is bringing whistleblowers to Morgantown to discuss the role they've played in environmental issues.

    A panel discussion is set for Sept. 18.

    Among the panelists is Rick Plitz, a former senior associate at the U.S. Climate Change Science Program who exposed White House censorship of reports on global warming in 2005.

    Also participating is Jack Spadaro, a former head of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy who reported attempts to whitewash an investigation into a Kentucky coal slurry spill.

    The third panelist is Wilma Subra, a Louisiana scientist who exposed misleading statements by the Food and Drug Administration that seafood harvested in the Gulf of Mexico was safe to consume after the 2010 oil spill.

    This event is being produced with the Government Accountability Project.
