REPORTER WALK TO BAM
WE WANT YOU TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT ROOSEVELT MCDUFFIE OF HURRICANE --

INVESTIGATORS SAY HE AND TWO OTHER PEOPLE HELD A FAMILY OF FOUR CAPTIVE FOR MORE THAN 15 HOURS!

Return to Story Index

G PUTNAM KIDNAPPING
IT HAPPENED SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY AT A HOME IN POCA...

THE TWO OTHERS HAVE BEEN CAUGHT, BUT MCDUFFIE TOOK OFF WHEN DEPUTIES ARRIVED...

BUT POLICE MAY HAVE NEVER BEEN ALERTED TO THE TERRIFYING ORDEAL, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR ONE OF THE VICTIMS.. AN 8 YEAR OLD GIRL, WHO MANAGED TO ESCAPE WITH A NOTE, SAYING HER FAMILY WAS BEING HELD CAPTIVE.

4806 i was kind of freaked out and scared

NEIGHBORS STILL SHAKEN AND TOO AFRAID TO GO ON CAMERA -- AFTER LEARNING WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE THIS TRAILER ON SILVER STREET IN POCA...

THE PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF SAYS KWAME BATES -- BOBBIE JOHNS AND ROOSEVELT MCDUFFIE -- SHOWED UP AROUND 8 SATURDAY NIGHT... DEMANDING DRUGS AND MONEY FROM THE TWO ADULTS LIVING HERE..

WHEN THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE THREE WERE TALKING ABOUT -- THE SITUATION ESCALATED QUICKLY...

INVESTIGATORS SAY THE CAMERON GEIGER WAS BEATEN -- AND HE AND HIS GIRLFRIEN CAMILLE BASHAM WERE TAKEN INTO SEPERATE ROOMS IN THE TRAILER TO BE QUESTIONED ABOUT THE DRUGS...

WHILE THEIR CHILDREN -- JUST 8 AND 11 YEARS OLD -- WERE TAKEN OUTSIDE...

    SHERIFF STEVE DEWEESE

DEPUTIES SAY THE SUSPECTS EVEN THREATENED TO HAVE OTHERS COME AND KILL THE ENTIRE FAMILY -- IF THEY DIDN'T GIVE UP THE DRUGS...

THE ENTIRE ORDEAL LASTED 15 HOURS -- UNTIL THE MOM CONVINCED THE SUSPECTS TO BRING HER KIDS INSIDE, SUNDAY MORNING...

3930 while she was in the room by herself she was able to find a paper and pen and write what was going on inside the house and hand it to her child

THAT CHILD -- AN 8 YEAR OLD GIRL -- MANAGED TO RUN TO A NEIGHBOR -- HANDING HER THE NOTE -- WHICH SAID TO CALL POLICE BECAUSE HER FAMILY WAS BEING HELD CAPTIVE

POLICE DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS A RANDOM CRIME AND SAY THE ADULT VICTIMS WERE TARGETED.

EIGHT SYRINGES OF OPANA WERE FOUND IN THE TRAILER.

THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING -- AND C-P-S IS INVOLVED... SO THE PARENTS MAY END UP FACING CHARGES.

AND AGAIN, IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO FIND ROOSEVELT MCDUFFIE, CALL POLICE.

IN THE STUDIO... KALLIE CART... EYEWITNESS NEWS.

164 CLOSURE
ALL LANES OF INTERSTATE - 64 IN CABELL COUNTY ARE ONCE AGAIN OPEN TO DRIVERS.

BUT A TWO-MILE STRETCH IN HUNTINGTON WAS SHUT DOWN FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS THIS EVENING.

EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR KERA MASHEK IS LIVE IN THE STUDIO WITH A PROGRESS REPORT... KERA...

Return to Story Index

KERA @ KIOSK
SEVERAL PARTS OF INTERSTATE 64 ARE UNDERGOING ROAD CONSTRUCTION RIGHT NOW.

AND IT WAS RIGHT BESIDE THE 29TH STREET EXIT BETWEEN BARBOURSVILLE AND HUNTINGTON THIS MORNING THAT A CONSTRUCTION TRUCK SNAGGED A UTLITY LINE--CAUSING DAMAGE TO TWO POLES, AND TEARING LINES.

THE RESULT: A DAY OF HEADACHES FOR MANY IN CABELL COUNTY.

IT WASN'T AN EASY FIX--WITH ALL NEW LINES NEEDED...LINES THAT RUN *OVER INTERSTATE 64, FORCING CREWS TO CLOSE THE ENTIRE HIGHWAY FOR TWO MILES, TWO HOURS MONDAY NIGHT.

EVEN WITH ADVANCE WARNING ABOUT THE SHUT DOWN--MANY DRIVERS HAD NO IDEA WHAT THEY WERE BEING DETOURED OFF THE INTERSTATE.

DON'T CG AT THIS ONE--CG AT NEXT TIME HE'S UP!!

Allen Holder/Charleston-So why am I off the highway?

OUT OF TOWNERS HAD NO CLUE HOW TO FIND THEIR WAY AROUND.

NATS OFFICER GIVING DIRECTIONS "60 runs right through town. Just follow the signs."

STARTING AT 6:30, POWER CREWS WERE HOPING TO AVOID THE BRUNT OF RUSH HOUR--AND GET ALL THEIR WORK FINISHED DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS.

AND THE MESS MADE HERE WASN'T JUST AN INCONVENIENCE FOR DRIVERS.

ELECTRICITY WAS KNOCKED OUT TO ABOUT 200 CUSTOMERS--LEAVING THEM WITH NO A-C ON A DAY OF 90+ DEGREE TEMPERATURES.

ALLISON FERRELL COULDN'T SWEAT IT OUT VERY LONG IN HER APARTMENT...SO SHE AND HER THREE-YEAR-OLD SON LEFT.

...BUT AT LEAST IT WAS ONLY A DAY-LONG OF PROBLEMS...WITH THINGS NOW GETTING BACK TO NORMAL.

IN FACT, THOSE FRUSTRATIONS NOW COMING TO AN END---WITH ALL LANES OF TRAFFIC REOPENED....AND THE LIGHTS NOW BACK ON TO ALL THOSE WHO SPENT THEIR DAY HOT--AND IN THE DARK.

IN THE STUDIO, KERA MASHEK, EYEWITNESS NEWS.

CHARLESTON CAT PROBLEM
THE CITY OF CHARLESTON IS STILL WORKING TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION TO ITS STRAY CAT PROBLEM.

THE ORDINANCE AND RULES COMMITTEE HELD A PUBLIC FORUM TONIGHT ON A NEW ORDINANCE THAT WOULD LIMIT THE NUMBER OF CATS A PERSON CAN OWN.

THAT ORDINANCE WOULD ALSO PROPOSE A FINE FOR CAT OWNERS WHO DON'T KEEP THEIR ANIMALS ON THEIR OWN PROPERTY.

BUT AFTER HEARING THE OPINIONS OF THOSE LIVING IN THE CITY...COMMITTEE MEMBERS DECIDED IT WASN'T THE RIGHT ACTION TO TAKE AND TABLED IT FOR NOW.

THEY SAY THE CAT ISSUE IS STILL A PROBLEM AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO WORK TO FIND A SOLUTION THAT WILL BE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CITY.

MEANWHILE, A SOLUTION TO A LONGTIME FLOODING PROBLEM IN HUNTINGTON IS ON THE WAY.

CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS AUTHORIZED LABOR AND EQUIPMENT TO FIX 11 CATCH BASINS, AND ALSO AUTHORIZED CREWS TO BUILD TWO RAIN GARDENS IN THE CITY.

THIS WILL HELP WITH HIGH WATER AND DRAINAGE ISSUES.

CITY COUNCIL ALSO APPROVED THE PURCHASE OF 24 IN-CAR VIDEO CAMERAS FOR THE CITY'S POLICE CRUISERS, AT A COST OF ABOUT 157-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

SYRIA WV VOTE
THE PRIMETIME ADDRESS COMES AS THE PRESIDENT IS BATTLING TO SWAY CONGRESS TO SUPPORT HIS PLAN TO HIT SYRIA WITH A MILITARY STRIKE.

EYEWITNESS NEWS LEAD POLITICAL REPORTER KENNIE BASS HAS THE LATEST ON WHERE WEST VIRGINIA'S CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION STANDS.

Kennie Bass/Eyewitness News: With public opinion firmly against a military strike against Syria, President Barack Obama continues lobbying congress to get its approval for his plan to hit Syria in retaliation for last month's deadly chemical weapons attack.

However, West Virginia senator Joe Manchin has already made up his mind. He's voting no.

    Sen. Joe Manchin/(D) West Virginia:

Kennie Bass/Eyewitness News: Manchin says the president has not presented clear and compelling evidence that Syria's chemical weapons present an immediate danger to the United States.

It's expected the senate will vote on the president's plan on Wednesday,

In the house, hearings on the Syrian crisis continued all day, but two of West Virginia's three representatives don't agree with the president's proposed course of action.

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito/(R) West Virginia:

In Charleston, Kennie Bass Eyewitness News.

HERE'S HOW WEST VIRGINIA'S CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION PLANS TO VOTE.

AS YOU JUST HEARD, SENATOR JOE MANCHIN IS NOT BACKING THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN.

WHILE SENATOR JAY ROCKEFELLER SAYS HE IS STILL GATHERING INFORMATION.

IN THE HOUSE, WHERE BRIEFINGS ON SYRIA HAVE BEEN TAKING PLACE ALL DAY, REPUBLICANS SHELLEY MOORE CAPITO AND DAVID MCKINLEY BOTH OPPOSE MILITARY INTERVENTION,

HOWEVER, CAPITO LEFT THE DOOR OPEN A BIT BY SAYING SHE WOULD WAIT TO SEE IF THE PRESIDENT WOULD PRESENT EVIDENCE THAT MAY CHANGE HER MIND.

RIGHT NOW, DEMOCRAT NICK RAHALL IS THE ONLY FIRM YES VOTE FROM WEST VIRGINIA.

WE WILL HAVE THE PRESIDENT'S PRIME-TIME ADDRESS LIVE RIGHT HERE ON WCHS TOMORROW ... WE'LL ALSO STREAM IT ON WCHSTV.COM .
