Katelyn Sykes photo Hi everyone and thanks for taking a second to get to know me.

I started at Eyewitness News in April 2013 as a reporter/photographer and couldn’t be happier to be out in the field again.

I am a 2007 graduate of the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University with a degree in broadcast journalism and business. In July 2007, I got my first job as a reporter at WDTV in Clarksburg. My most memorable story while working in Clarksburg was the search for a missing autistic hiker in Dolly Sods. After four long days, Jacob Allen was found alive.

When I left WDTV in December 2010, I was the morning anchor/producer. I love being on the desk, but enjoy being out in the field a lot more. That’s when my husband and I decided to take a chance and move out to California. In January 2011, I took a job at KION-TV in Salinas as a multimedia journalist. I covered a wide range of stories at Central Coast News, from the AT&T Pro-Am Golf Tournament at Pebble Beach, to a great white shark attack against a surfer, to the tsunami in Japan that crossed the Pacific Ocean and damaged the Santa Cruz Harbor. Every day was something different and that is why I love this business.

While I enjoyed my time in California, I knew back east is where I wanted to call home. In February 2012, I took a job at WSAZ-TV here in Charleston. In November 2012, I made the tough decision to leave the industry to focus on my baby girl. Luckily, a job opened up at WCHS as a morning reporter, and I jumped at the opportunity. Now I get the best of both worlds: news and mommyhood.

When I’m not in the newsroom, I enjoy spending time with my daughter, Caroline, and husband, Alex. I also like to travel, especially visiting zoos, and enjoy cooking, baking and running. I ran my first half-marathon in May 2013 and hope to run a full marathon in the future.

I’m always looking for a great story to tell. If you have any story ideas or would simply like to say hello, just send me an email.
