OHIO NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online Ohio relaxes rules for state police media comment July 03, 2009 12:47 PM COLUMBUS, Ohio The agency overseeing Ohio's state troopers says it will relax a new policy that warned employees they could be disciplined for releasing unauthorized information. The Ohio Department of Public Safety made the changes after a review of the new policy by Gov. Ted Strickland amid criticism from public employee unions. The policy warns employees they could face discipline up to firing for releasing news to the media without proper authorization. Memos obtained by The Columbus Dispatch show that State Highway Patrol officials long fought the new policy, saying it would hinder the release of information to the public. Sally Meckling, spokeswoman for the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, says the policy was a scare tactic that violated employees' freedom of speech.
