Cincinnati police officer faces fraud charges
May 09, 2008 9:27 PM

CINCINNATI
A Cincinnati police officer is accused of orchestrating a fraud scheme that preyed on people who lost their homes to foreclosure.

Federal charges against Officer Adrian Mitchell accuse him of forging signatures, falsifying documents and misleading banks to secure loans to buy properties worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Mitchell pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday morning. His attorney, Ravert Clark says his client was surprised by the indictment.

A U.S. District Court judge revealed the charges Thursday when she unsealed a 12-count federal indictment. A Cincinnati police spokesman says Mitchell has been suspended since June 2007 pending the outcome of an investigation.

If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
