U.S. NATIONAL NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online Continental asks to be exempted from delays rule March 18, 2010 3:27 PM NEW YORK Continental Airlines is the latest to ask for an exemption from new rules regarding flight delays. Continental says construction at New York's Kennedy Airport will also slow operations at two other nearby airports, including its Newark, N.J., hub. Continental joins JetBlue, Delta and American Airlines in requesting an exemption from a government rule limiting how long passengers can be delayed on the tarmac. Those are the three biggest operators at Kennedy Airport. Continental says if those airlines get an exemption because of predicted delays at Kennedy, it would only be fair to give airlines at LaGuardia and Liberty airports the same break. The rule is scheduled to take effect in late April. It could result in fines of up to $27,500 per passenger if airlines have a plane stuck on the tarmac for more than three hours and don't give passengers a chance to get off. Last week, Continental's CEO called it a stupid rule and warned that rather than risk big fines, his airline would "cancel a lot of flights." |
