Thousands celebrate before Obama speech
August 28, 2008 5:08 PM

DENVER
It's been a celebratory atmosphere outside Denver's pro football stadium today as thousands prepared to file into a mile-long line to hear Barack Obama's historic acceptance speech tonight.

People began lining up hours before the Secret Service opened the gates to Invesco Field at Mile High. Among the political souvenirs being sold outside of the home of the Denver Broncos are foam Obama fingers, the type usually seen at football games.

The festive atmosphere has been tempered by the Colorado sun. A fire truck dispensed water to the thirsty crowd, while one company handed out free bottled water.

There are two checkpoints at the venue. One of them allows people onto the stadium grounds, another allows entry to the stadium itself.

Many attendees don't seem to mind the long line and the tight security. One calls it an "event of a lifetime." Another says she's "glad to be a part of it."
