Hanna closes in on the Carolinas
September 05, 2008 2:42 PM

MIAMI
Tropical Storm Hanna continues to approach the eastern U.S., with its top sustained winds now near 70 miles an hour.

It's about 300 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina, moving to the north at about 20 miles an hour.

A hurricane watch is in effect from Edisto Beach, South Carolina, to the Outer Banks of North Carolina near the Virginia border.

The first rain is starting to fall on barrier island beaches.

The latest forecast calls for Hanna to make landfall on the northern coast of South Carolina early tomorrow before marching quickly up the Atlantic seaboard and pushing into New England. It's expected to dump several inches of rain on the Carolinas, and in central Virginia, Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania.

Hurricane Ike, meanwhile, has weakened to a Category 3 storm as it heads toward the Bahamas and Florida.
