Evacuations under way for LA-area foothills
February 09, 2010 1:20 PM

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif.
In some Los Angeles-area foothill towns, homeowners are packing their cars and fleeing their homes.

Evacuation orders are in effect for more than 500 homes on some hillsides north of Los Angeles. County sheriff's deputies have been going door-to-door, urging people to leave.

Those who choose to stay are signing waivers stating that they are aware of the risk.

Deputies are also asking people to move their vehicles and trash cans away from the streets.

Saturday morning, water and rocks roared through those streets, smashing cars and concrete barriers together.

There are fears of similar conditions later today. Forecasters have issued a flash flood watch through late tonight for neighborhoods below the slopes that were scorched by fires last summer.

They say there's a chance of thunderstorms that could dump more than two inches of rain.

Basins that are designed to keep mud and boulders away from homes near the burn areas overflowed over the weekend.
