A Louisville student was honored with the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Michael Kamen Solo Award presented to a needy student with great musical ability.



The Courier-Journal reports 18-year-old Matt DeVore, a senior at Butler Traditional High School, was presented with a new French horn worth $17,000 on Friday.

DeVore has played music since he was a child, but always on borrowed instruments.

Foundation programs director Tricia Steel said only two or three students win the award each year.

DeVore said he recorded his audition tape for the application over and over until he was satisfied.

The award was presented during a surprise ceremony at his band class.

DeVore said he will attend the University of Louisville in the fall to study music education.
