Asbury getting promoted to university

Asbury College in central Kentucky is graduating to university status in the spring.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the 119-year-old private school, with an enrollment of more than 1,600, will change its name to more closely reflect its current status.

School President Sandra Gray says the school, in Wilmore, has outgrown its name.

The school also wanted to distinguish itself as a liberal arts institution apart from Asbury Theological Seminary, with which it is often confused.

Campbellsville College became Campbellsville University in 1996. Brescia College in Owensboro became Brescia University in 1998. And Bellarmine College in Louisville became Bellarmine University in 2000.
