Couple sentenced to life in child's death
October 10, 2008 3:00 AM

A central Kentucky father and stepmother were sentenced Thursday to life in prison for the brutal beating death of a 10-year-old girl.

Special Circuit Judge Gary Payne agreed with jurors in the sentencing of Patrick and Joy Watkins in Clark Circuit Court.

Patrick Watkins was the father of 10-year-old Michaela Watkins, who was found dead in March 2007. Joy Watkins was her stepmother.

Police say the child was scalded with hot water and beaten to death with a piece of lumber. The child had a total of 77 injuries, most on her head, and five crushed ribs.
