Young athlete improves, collapsed during training
February 08, 2012 7:29 AM

A middle school athlete's condition has been upgraded a day after he collapsed during baseball practice in Lexington.

Eighth-grader Benjamin Highland collapsed Monday while he practiced with the Lafayette High School baseball team. On Tuesday afternoon, his medical condition was upgraded from critical to serious at University of Kentucky Hospital, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader .

Fayette Schools athletics director Don Adkins credited the quick response of the trainer and coaches in helping save the 14-year-old's life.

Adkins said an off-duty nurse who was walking her dog saw what was happening and administered CPR after the trainer used an automated external defibrillator on Highland.

Highland is a student at Jessie Clark Middle School and had come to take part in conditioning drills, described as not being strenuous.
