Law Firm Working Toward Wellness Goals
February 14, 2014

Eyewitness News Reporter Darrah Wilcox Dinsmore and Shohl employees in Charleston, are using the first 12 weeks of the new year for an officewide wellness challenge to feel, live and act healthier.

"That was one of the reasons we wanted to do this as a group because we wanted to make sure people had a support system for healthy living that we're trying to promote, firm administrator Tom Hamm said.

They've started a weekly healthy potluck lunch.

"It's nice to get them to come in here and eat salad, eat soup. That's part of the mantra, and the other part is not just eating well but exercising," office managing partner John Hussell said.

They've also invited experts like dietitians to come in and talk about how to eat better.

"It creates a better atmosphere," Hussell said. "The morale is better because of it and you see things like we're doing today and it's just a good opportunity to bond."

There's an on-site gym at the office, and a group of runners who go out for regular lunchtime jogs.

"We have a lot of people this has been the impotes they needed to get out and whether it's run, or walk or exercise, It's been really good for so many people," Hussell said.

17 people are involved in a weight loss challenge that's already logged 120 pounds lost. "Everybody's pretty excited pretty proud of the progress we've made," Hamm said.

Others are getting involved in different ways, and they say it's exciting to see how everyone's come together.

"We feel if they're living healthier and they're acting healthier and they're being more active and they're watching what they eat, they'll be more awake at work, they'll feel better, they'll be more productive, but also gives them an opportunity to sit down and have lunch, and have meetings with people that they normally might not be around on a regular basis, so it gives us a couple of different opportunities and goals to reach there," Hamm said.

The legal industry can induce a lot of stress, which can lead to depression and anxiety. They're hoping the challenge, can help keep that in check.

"It's very important to make sure that figure out ways to relieve our stress levels," Hamm said. "In this office, or especially in a law firm, and this is an opportunity to do that."

Hamm said they hope to continue some aspects of the wellness challenge, like the healthy lunches, beyond the 12 weeks.
