Summer Swimming Safety
June 7, 2013

Eyewitness News Reporter Darrah Wilcox One way to beat the heat this summer is to dive into your nearest swimming pool. Whether it's in your own backyard, or somewhere like the local YMCA, summer and swimming go hand in hand. But there are certainly some lifesaving tips to keep in mind.

Some of these may sound like common sense, but it never hurts to refresh your safety knowledge:

* Never leave a child unattended around water for any amount of time.

Drowning can happen in a matter of seconds -- know what drowning looks like. You may be surprised that someone who is drowning is not likely to scream for help or flail their arms. They are likely to be still and silent.

* If you own a pool, make sure you have the proper barriers when it's not in use.

* Take classes in swimming and or CPR and use a flotation device if necessary.

* If you are at a public pool, follow its posted rules.

"No running. Always apply your sunscreen. Always have a buddy system, and always get swim tested if you can't swim," lifeguard Mikaela Earl said.

So while you are splishing and splashing away the summer months, just remember to play it safe in and around the pool.
