Chapmanville , Logan County , West Virginia

People living in the area call Route 10 in Logan County a dangerous road.

That dangerous road turned deadly Thursday morning, just outside of Chapmanville.

Deputies said Eddie Mullins, 27, of Chapmanville was driving a 2002 Chevy Malibu while traveling north on W.Va Route 10, when he crossed over into oncoming traffic.

A driver in the southbound lane, noticed the Malibu coming over into his lane, and moved his vehicle over as far to the guardrail as he could to avoid contact.

The vehicle had no contact with the Malibu, deputies said, but the Malibu continued into the path of the southbound lane of traffic and hit a truck, driven by Dewanna Dalton, 45, head on.

Mullins and his passengers, Michael Johnson, 38, of Harts, and Terry Fowler, 39, of Chapmanville died of injuries received in the crash.

Dalton was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital with serious injuries.

Deputy Derrick Miller, with the Logan County Sheriff's Office, said speeding has been an issue in the area and a reason for many accidents in the area.

Neighbors agree with the deputy.

"There were several people passing, just like nothing had happened today. Just business as usual, going 75 to 80 mph," William Ellis Gore, who lives in the area, said.

People living in the area said this isn't a new problem.

Speeding has caused several accidents there, and neighbors are hoping the tragedy is a wake-up call for everyone, including officers in the area.

"You don't see many police. And if they would come down there and maybe just observe the traffic there for a few hours or whatever, it'd make a big difference," Gore said.

And police said they are working on that.

"Routine patrols, DUI patrols, speeding violations and any kind of motor vehicle violation checkpoints we have them out here several days a week," Miller said.

Neighbors said anyone driving down the road needs to keep their eyes open.

"They have to watch other people’s driving as much as they have to watch their own driving, because it's very dangerous," Gore said.

Now people in the area hope the speeders slow down for the sake of their own safety.

Logan County deputies said three people were killed in a head-on crash on Route 10.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Department said the wreck occurred Thursday morning near Stone Branch.

Two vehicles were involved in the wreck, a car and a pickup truck. Three people in the car were killed. The driver of the pickup truck was flown to a local hospital.

The sheriff’s department advised on its Facebook page at about 12:30 p.m. that Route 10 near Chapmanville would be closed for about two more hours.
