It's a dangerous job, but sometimes being a state trooper just runs in your blood.

"I have a family history of State Police. My grandfather was in the state police from ‘55 until about ’65,” Colin Casselman, who was testing for the 65th West Virginia State Police Cadet Class, said.

However, before Casselman can follow in his grandfather's footsteps, he has to go through a physical fitness test. That test consists of 27 push-ups in one minute, 29 sit-ups in 1 minute and a 1.5 mile run in 14 minutes and 52 seconds.

"Physical fitness was good, I felt I did a lot better on the push-ups and sit-ups. Mile and a half run I passed it," Casselman said.

Close to 200 State Police hopefuls came out Saturday morning to take the first round of testing. State troopers even let me join in on the fun, and I will say that test is a little harder than it sounds.

For this class of cadet hopefuls, this is the first step in what they hope will become their career.

"I’ve lived in this state my whole life, I enjoy it. I love the pride that everybody has in this state, and I’d just like to protect and serve," Nick Romito, who was also testing for the 65th Cadet Class, said.

The people who passed this test move on to reading and suitability tests, if those scores make the cut, the cadet hopefuls moves onto more testing and finally interviews, before they can be selected for cadet school.

"It’s a very intensive process to weed out and get the best of the best," Capt. Reginald Patterson, who is in charge of recruiting for the West Virginia State Police, said.

Captain Patterson said he was excited to see such a big turnout for this year's testing, and Casselman is happy to get started on his dream of becoming a trooper.

"My first goal is to just become a member of the West Virginia State Police, and one day join the academy,” Casselman said.
