Police said the body of a woman was found on the railroad tracks on Charleston’s West Side early Saturday.
"We're basically starting from ground zero working on a murder investigation," Lt. Steve Cooper, with Charleston police, said.
Several questions remain as police investigate the shooting death of Branda Basham, 22.
Charleston police responded to a report body lying near the railroad tracks off Madison Street on the west side at about 10:30 a.m.
Police don't have any suspects in this shooting.
But several people living near the train tracks told Eyewitness News they heard gunshots between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m.
Police are looking for any information those neighbors can share.
"We'd like to hear from them, too, just so we can maybe know what they were hearing,” Cooper said. “They may know something important that they may not realize."
While police have little to go on, they know Basham had a troubled past.
Just last month, she was arrested on Charleston's West Side and charged with solicitation to commit prostitution.
Whether that had anything to do with her murder could become more clear, as police continue their investigation.
"Obviously, any time that we have a case where someone's life is taken, that is our highest priority case,” Cooper said. “We're going to work around the clock until we get to the bottom of it."
Many neighbors are saying they heard gunshots. Police are asking those people and anyone that may have information about what happened here, to come forward and call police or 911.
Charleston police are on the scene of a possible homicide on the West Side.
Police say the body of a woman was found on the railroad tracks by Madison Street around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
At this time, we do not know the victim's identity or how they died; but police say it appears to be a homicide.
We have a crew headed to the scene. Stay tuned to Eyewitness News for more information.
